Concord adds two sports

. Concord University is adding men's soccer and women's golf beginning this fall.

The Mountain Lions will now offer more varsity sport opportunities (18) than any other four-year college or university in West Virginia. Concord women's soccer coach Steve Barrett will coach the men's program as well. "I am excited at the prospect of starting up a men's soccer program here at Concord. I plan on working hard to ensure that soccer will be played at a high level for many years to come. This is an exciting opportunity for the local soccer community and I am thrilled to be a part of it," he said. Concord men’s golf coach Gene Davis, the East Region Coach of the Year in 2006, adds the women’s teams to his coaching duties. "Many young women of this region will welcome the opportunity to challenge themselves at the next level of competition," Davis said. Athletics Director Greg Quick said the opportunities provided by expanded sport offerings extend beyond intercollegiate competition, "The opportunity for these young men and women will extend beyond the athletics stage as this is a chance for these very talented student-athletes to develop the self-esteem and confidence necessary to put the nationally recognized diploma of Concord University to work."
