Northwest Missouri State claims Division II championship

Florence, AL (Sports Network) - LaRon Council rushed for 172 yards on 22 carries and two touchdowns, as Northwest Missouri State held on to win the Division II football championship with a 30-23 victory over Grand Valley State.

Blake Bolles completed 15-of-23 throws for 198 yards with a TD pass and an interception and also rushed for a score, while Jake Soy had nine receptions for 118 yards and a key touchdown early in the fourth quarter for Northwest Missouri State (14-1), which was appearing in the championship game for the fifth straight season, but lost the previous four. It was the school's third title in the program's history.

The Bearcats, who built a 21-0 halftime lead, lost the past championships by a combined 19 points.

Brad Iciek passed for 290 yards on 28-of-49 completions with two touchdowns and a pick for Grand Valley State (13-2), which outscored Northwest Missouri State 20-2 prior to Soy's backbreaking 26-yard touchdown catch on a 4th-and-4 situation with 10:00 left in the fourth quarter.

Ryan Bass led the receiving corps with eight catches for 111 yards and a touchdown and Blake Smolen picked up 45 yards on the ground, including a score and added another 70 yards on six catches in defeat.

Jay Jandasek made a 21-yard field goal with about 4 1/2 minutes to play to make it a 30-23 game, before Grand Valley State's onside kick was unsuccessful.

The Bearcats were unable to move the ball on their next possession and were forced to punt after going three-and-out, giving Grand Valley State one last chance with 3:00 remaining. However after getting to midfield, Iciek threw two incomplete passes sandwiched around a rush for a loss, setting up a 4th- and-15. The quarterback then had his final pass batted down and Northwest Missouri State ran out the remaining time on the clock.
