Wisconsin Whitewater caps perfect season with title win

Sat 19th, December 2009

Salem, VA (Sports Network) - Levell Coppage scored three times, including the game-winner late in the fourth quarter as Wisconsin-Whitewater finished a perfect season and captured its second Division III championship with a 38-28 victory over Mount Union in the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl.

Coppage finished the game with 111 yards on 22 carries while Jeff Donovan went 26-for-40 with 323 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Aaron Rusch finished the game with eight catches for 109 yards and a score for the Warhawks (15-0), who avenged last year's 31-26 loss to Mount Union in the Stagg Bowl.

Kurt Rocco went 23-for-39 with 383 yards and three scores while also rushing for a touchdown in the loss. Cecil Shorts had 10 catches for 185 yards and two scores for the Raiders (13-1), who had won three of the last four Division III championships and were searching for their 11th overall. Wes Ryder II caught the other score while Terrance Morring had 20 carries for 88 yards.

It marked the fifth straight meeting between the two schools in the title game. Mount Union won in 2005 and 2006 before Wisconsin-Whitewater finally prevailed in 2007 for its first championship.

With the score tied, the Warhawks got the ball with 3:15 to play at their own 42 thanks to a 13-yard punt return from Rusch.

A pair of Coppage runs followed by a 14-yard catch from Rusch gave the team the ball at the Raiders' 29. Donovan lost two yards on the net play, but Coppage took the following handoff down the left sideline and into the end zone for a 35-28 lead with 1:17 to play.

Mount Union was facing a 4th-and-8 and Rocco fumbled the ball as he was sacked and Wisconsin Whitewater recovered the ball and Jeff Schebler's 44-yard field goal with 25 seconds to play sealed the win.

Trailing by 14 points to start the second half, Mount Union made it a one- score game on its first possession as a five-play, 77-yard drive was finished on a 23-yard TD catch by Shorts.

The Raiders tied the game in the fourth. With the ball at the five on a 1st- and-goal, Rocco avoided the rush and scrambled into the end zone down the right side to make it 28-all with 12:08 to play.

The Warhawks struck on their first possession of the game as a 10-play, 85- yard drive was capped on a Coppage one-yard run over the left guard for a 7-0 lead with 8:38 left in the first.

Wisconsin Whitewater took a 14-0 lead just 1:28 into the second on a one-yard touchdown catch by Cory Robinson from Donovan, but the Raiders answered just over two minutes later on a 19-yard TD catch by Shorts from Rocco.

Coppage's second touchdown of the game, this one also a one-yard run, with 7:27 left in the first half made it a 21-7 game, but Mount Union again responded as Ryder's two-yard touchdown catch made it a one-score game with 4:33 left in the first half.

The Warhawks, though, marched back down the field and took a 28-14 lead into the locker room on Rusch's 10-yard scamper into the end zone off a screen pass.
