Coppage, UW-Whitewater are Division III champs again

Sat 18th, December 2010

Salem, VA (Sports Network) - Same story, different year.

Levell Coppage rushed for 299 yards and three touchdowns and Wisconsin- Whitewater captured its second straight Division III championship with a 31-21 victory over Mount Union on Saturday.

It was the sixth straight meeting between the two teams in the championship game and third time in the last four years that Wisconsin-Whitewater prevailed.

Coppage, who also scored three times in last year's victory, carried 39 times and broke off a 75-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter that sealed the title for the top-ranked Warhawks (15-0).

Chasing its 11th Division III title, Mount Union (14-1) scored all 21 of its points in the second quarter.

The second-ranked Purple Raiders were led by Matt Piloto, who passed for 267 yards and two touchdowns but also threw four interceptions.

The six-year Stagg Bowl rivalry between the two teams is now tied 3-3.

Wisonsin-Whitewater had an early 7-0 lead when Coppage ran for a 54-yard touchdown in the first quarter. A 30-yard field goal from Eric Kindler made it 10-0 early in the second.

But Piloto threw touchdown passes of 39 yards to Kyle Miller and 58 yards to Cecil Shorts -- and Jeremy Murray had a one-yard TD run in between -- to give the Purple Raiders a 21-10 lead.

Coppage added an 11-yard touchdown inside three minutes and Warhawks quarterback Lee Brekke hit Tyker Huber for a 31-yard touchdown pass with 1:01 left in the half to give Wisconsin-Whitewater a 24-21 lead heading into the locker room.

Then the Warhawk defense clamped down, forcing three turnovers in the second half on the way to the 10-point win.

Brekke completed just 8-of-22 passes for 121 yards and was intercepted three times. Adam Brandes had three catches for 53 yards in the win.

Shorts led all receivers with seven catches for 90 yards, while Murray ran nine times for 25 yards in the loss.
