The Bowl Championship Series is only slightly less controversial than the gun control issue, abortion, and the war in Iraq
It's only early July but it's never too early for some BCS Predictions!
And it's safe to say that no matter what BCS Predictions I make here there is one college football prediction that is a lock: we are destined to spend another fall debating the merits (or, actually, lack thereof) of the current system and pining for a playoff.
However, the bowl system is here to stay and since we are less than a month away from the start of the college football season let's make some wild, baseless BCS Predictions in regards to which 10 teams will play in the five marquee post-New Year's bowl games:
Rose Bowl
Big Ten Champion vs. Pac 10 Champion (If available)
BCS Prediction: Wisconsin VS. USC
5 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 1
Pasadena, California
It looks like the winner of the Ohio State-USC game in early September has the inside track on the National Championship Game while the runner-up will likely end up in Pasadena. I know, I know: I'm a sucker by going with Ohio State. But I think the Pac-10 is down this year and I do believe the Buckeyes can win against the Trojans. Wisconsin gets the sloppy seconds and if they falter Illinois is waiting in the wings.
Sugar Bowl
BCS vs. SEC Champion (If available)
BCS Prediction: South Florida VS. Georgia
8:30 p.m., Friday, Jan. 2
New Orleans
There is a very strong chance that the Bulldogs could be one of the best two or three teams in the country and NOT make it to a BCS bowl! Their schedule is one of the toughest in the country and two losses is pretty probable. If they lose three games and miss the SEC Championship Game then the BCS crew could take the winner of the SEC West. South Florida is my "sleeper" to win the Big East and I think they are going to make some national championship noise.
Fiesta Bowl
BCS vs. Big 12 Champion (If available)
BCS Prediction: Arizona State VS. Oklahoma
8 p.m., Monday, Jan. 5
Phoenix
I believe that Oklahoma is the No. 3 team in the nation and that they very easily could get stacked up against Florida (or another SEC rep) if the BCS folk are sick of sending Ohio State to the title game to get slaughtered. Oklahoma will have to battle through an ultra-competitive Big 12 and come out with less than two losses (B12 Title Game included) in order to make it to the national championship, but I don't think they can do it and they will get just edged out by the Buckeyes. Arizona State is kind of a fill-in, as I didn't want to give two bids to the pathetic ACC and I couldn't find another Big East team (although it's the No. 3 conference this year) that was worthy seeing as I have West Virginia pegged for a disappointing season.
Orange Bowl
BCS vs. ACC Champion (If available)
BCS Prediction: Florida State VS. Missouri
8 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 1
Miami Gardens, Florida
Here is my other mini-shocker: Florida State winning the ACC. Everyone and their sister has Clemson, but I feel like we've been down this road before with the Tigers. FSU has seven home games, including key tilts with Clemson and Wake, and I can see them sneaking in. Missouri is another team that I'm not that high on, but with an easy schedule and a lot of buzz from Chase Daniels and their 2007 run I can see them being ranked high early and doing just enough to make it into the Top 12.
BCS National Championship
BCS Prediction: Florida VS. Ohio State
8 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 8
Miami Gardens, Fla.
Let's run it back. This would be a rematch of the bloodbath that ensued two years ago, with Florida putting OSU and the Big 10 in its place, 41-14. The Gators are just as big, just as fast, and just as well schooled this time around. But there is just something about this Ohio State team that is appealing. Perhaps they could save a little face and make a motivated march to the title game. Or that seemingly four-month layoff between their final regular season game and the championship game could set them up to become the Buffalo Bills of college football.
