College Football: LSU BEGINS CAMP

Odds & News | Webmaster ( Wed 3rd, March 2010 )

The LSU Tigers football team formally kicked off the spring practice season, starting camp on Monday.

LSU will undoubtedly be one of the most interesting camps to watch this spring. Coming off a relatively unsatisfactory (by LSU standards) 9-4 season and with a coach sitting on the hot seat, LSU has to get much better on offense, or else heads will roll in Baton Rouge.

The Tigers completed the 2009 season ranked 112th in the country in total offense, which was the worst offense of any team with a winning record. This was with preseason All-SEC players Charles Scott, Brandon LaFell and Ciron Black all of whom are no longer on the roster.

Russell Shepard, the highly touted quarterback, will be the player to watch for the Tigers. Shepard will make the change to wide receiver full time. The LSU fans were aggravated with the lack of involvement he had in the game plan during the 2009 season. With no proven running back, head coach Les Miles will look to get the ball in Shepard's hands as much as possible.

A bigger question might be whether or not the LSU offensive line can block long enough to allow quarterback Jordan Jefferson to get Shepard the ball. LSU gave up 37 sacks in 2009, tied with South Carolina for last place in the SEC. They lost Black, who started at left tackle, also right guard Lyle Hitt is gone from the offensive line. For LSU to be successful, it begins up front. If they can't get the offensive line fixed, LSU, and Miles in particular, can be in serious trouble.

Big Cat Weekend Coming Up

Gene Chizik, the new head coach for Auburn, made several waves this offseason. Auburn hosted its 'Big Cat Weekend.' An unofficial recruiting weekend drew the attention of 22 star recruits, 10 of which eventually signed with Auburn last month. The same outcome and success as last year. Another 'Big Cat Weekend' will return to Plains May 28th.

Auburn will welcome a select group of 2011 prospects to check out the Tigers. The event will include current and former players, several of whom were involved with the event last year.

While the coaching methods of Auburn's coaching staff draw ire of several SEC pundits, the results can't be argued with. The Tigers rode a wave of impetus throughout last year en route to being the #6 recruiting class in the nation. The momentum established from recruiting with the inaugural 'Big Cat Weekend' and 'Tiger Prowl' across the state of Alabama. Unless there is an announcement of the Big Cat Sequel, there is no indication that the momentum won't carry on at the Plains.
