College Football Information: Oklahoma Sooners 2010

What You Must Know: The defense winged under the radar most of last season with everyone focusing on the offense's troubles. This will be another fine defense that will end up in the top 10 nationally providing the defensive core is healthy. There are some stars to talk about, DT Adrian Taylor's broken leg is not a major concern and DE Jeremy Beal has been a rushing nightmare over the last 2 seasons. Newcomers are needed at linebacker and corner, but the safeties, Sam Proctor and Quinton Carter, are strong, and Travis Lewis is an All-American caliber player who can help all the other linebackers.

Defensive Line
Projected Starters: With Gerald McCoy leaving early for the NFL, the core of the defensive will be Adrian Taylor, a 6'4, 291-pound senior. However, he broke his leg in the Sun Bowl and will need a while to get well, but when he was healthy he was a tough run stopper who was extraordinary in the year 2009 BCS Championship loss to Florida. He is big, he is quick, and he is a big pass rusher.

Taking the place of McCoy will be sophomore Jamarkus McFarland, one of the country's top overall linemen and on everyone's list of 3 best defensive linemen. At 6'2, 296 pounds he has the built for the nose tackle position with NFL power and outstanding speed, and while playing very little last year, he had 2.5 sacks and 8 tackles in his true freshman season, and the sky is the limit this year. Jeremy Beal had a huge 2008 making 61 tackles with 8.5 sacks, and then he took his game to a new level last season with 70 tackles, 11 sacks, and 19 tackles for loss to receive all-star credits and a finalist for the Hendricks Award. At 6'3, 261 pounds he has great size and can finish with the speed of the game, and now he has the chance to shine as a star player and be in the hunt for all the defensive linemen honors.

Junior Frank Alexander has not been the most famous of the OU defensive linemen, getting outshined by players like Beal and McCoy, but he's been perfect in the revolution. A reserve for most of his career, he played when Auston English got upset and started the last 4 games of the year ending with 23 tackles, 1.5 sacks, and 7 tackles for loss. The 6'4, 259-pounder has extraordinary speed and an immense burst off the ball, and now with his experience to go along with his ability there is no reason for him not to do more as a pass rusher.
