Sun Devils sting Cardinal in rout

Sat 6th, September 2008

Tempe, AZ (Sports Network) - Rudy Carpenter threw for 345 yards and three touchdowns, boosting 15th-ranked Arizona State to a 41-17 rout of Stanford.

Carpenter completed 27-of-36 passes and was picked off once for the Sun Devils (2-0, 1-0 Pac-10), who pulled away with a pair of TDs in the fourth quarter.

Dimitri Nance had 75 yards rushing and a TD, and Keegan Herring ran for 59 yards and a score for Arizona State.

"We had some blown opportunities, but I thought we played well on both sides of the football," said Arizona State coach Dennis Erickson. "We were able to keep everything in front of us, which was our key to the game."

Tavi Pritchard went 11-of-18 passing for 97 yards for the Cardinal (1-1, 1-1), while Toby Gerhart ran for 67 yards and two TDs in a losing cause.

Gerhart's one-yard run had Stanford within 27-17 with 3:07 left in the third quarter, but Dan Knapp caught a two-yard TD pass from Carpenter less than five minutes into the fourth.

Troy Nolan then came up with an interception of Pritchard, and the Sun Devils sealed the win when Herring scored from a yard away with 7:15 remaining.

Thomas Weber hit a 23-yard field goal midway through the opening quarter, but Stanford went ahead on Gerhart's five-yard TD run later in the first.

Weber nailed a 21-yard field goal 13 seconds into the second, and ASU went ahead for good later in the period on Carpenter's 11-yard TD pass to Michael Jones.

Aaron Zagory kicked a 28-yard field goal for Stanford with 52 seconds left in the second quarter, but Carpenter hit Kerry Taylor in stride for a 45-yard score just 23 seconds later for a 20-10 halftime margin.

Nance scored on a one-yard run early in the third.
