USC remains No. 1; East Carolina vaults into rankings

Sun 7th, September 2008

New York, NY (Sports Network) - Southern California remained the top-ranked team in the latest Associated Press college football poll, but a second consecutive upset of a ranked team vaulted East Carolina into the top-25 at No. 14.

The Pirates (2-0) followed up their season-opening win against Virginia Tech with a dominant 24-3 victory over then-No. 8 West Virginia. East Carolina is ranked for the first time since 1999.

Southern California (1-0), meanwhile, kept the top spot for a second straight week. The Trojans, who received 33 first-place votes and 1,577 points from a nationwide media panel, were idle this past weekend after their season-opening rout of Virginia and will host Ohio State this coming Saturday.

Ohio State (2-0) struggled against Ohio University on Saturday, earning a 26-14 win, and dropped two spots in this week's poll from third to fifth.

Georgia (2-0), the preseason No. 1, remained second, while Oklahoma (2-0) and Florida (2-0) each moved up one spot to third and fourth, respectively.

Each of the top five teams received at least one first-place vote, as did Missouri and LSU, which each kept their spots at Nos. 6 and No. 7, respectively.

Texas moved up two spots from 10th to eighth and is followed by Auburn and Wisconsin.

The second 10 consists of Alabama, Texas Tech, Kansas, East Carolina, Arizona State, Oregon, Penn State, BYU, South Florida and Wake Forest.

Fresno State, Utah, California, Illinois and West Virginia are the last five teams ranked. California moved into the poll after a 66-3 demolition of Washington State.

UCLA was No. 23 last week after its 27-24 overtime win against Tennessee to start the season, but fell out of this week's poll despite not playing. The Bruins will get a crack at another top-25 team this coming Saturday with a visit to BYU.

In addition to the USC/Ohio State matchup, two other games feature top-25 opponents against each other. On Friday, Kansas visits South Florida and on Saturday, Fresno State hosts Wisconsin.
