Boulder, CO (Sports Network) - Colorado head football coach Dan Hawkins agreed to a two-year contract extension on Tuesday.
The extension was slated to kick in as of July 1, 2008 and will take Hawkins through the 2012 season. His compensation package for the current fiscal year is nearly $1 million, not counting certain performance incentives.
Terms of his original five-year, $4.25 million deal, signed on January 1, 2006, were set to expire on December 31, 2010.
"Dan has consistently demonstrated a high level of professionalism, dedication, integrity and commitment to not only the football program, but to the entire university," said director of athletics Mike Bohn. "Coach Hawkins is making significant progress across the board and we recognize the importance of continuity in our leadership."
The 47-year-old California native has led the Buffs to a 3-2 mark thus far in 2008, with a loss in their Big 12 opener against Texas last Saturday. Since taking over for the embattled Gary Barnett following the 2005 campaign, Hawkins has compiled an 11-18 record over two-plus seasons.
In addition, he led Colorado to a bowl berth last season, a 30-24 loss to Alabama in the Independence Bowl.
Prior to arriving in Boulder, Hawkins went 53-11 in his five years at Boise State (2001-05). His teams were also 37-3 in Western Athletic Conference play, which included four straight conference titles from 2002-05.
