Reynolds shines as Villanova downs Seton Hall in OT

Wed 7th, January 2009

Newark, NJ (Sports Network) - Scottie Reynolds' four free throws down the stretch of overtime finished off his brilliant 40-point performance, as the 18th-ranked Villanova Wildcats posted a grueling 89-85 victory over Seton Hall in another Big East slugfest.

Reynolds connected on five three-pointers while draining 15-of-16 from the charity stripe, as Villanova (13-2, 1-1 Big East) rebounded from a setback at Marquette to notch the hard-fought win.

Dante Cunningham posted 21 points and 13 rebounds, while Dwayne Anderson pulled down a game-high 15 boards in the win.

Jeremy Hazell sunk six three-pointers for a team-high 26 points for the Pirates (9-6, 0-3), who dropped their third straight game and fifth in their last six overall. Eugene Harvey chipped in 19 points in the tough loss.

After both clubs traded three-pointers in the extra period, 'Nova's Reggie Redding scored for an 83-81 advantage with 2:51 left.

That proved to be the last field goal for either team. The Pirates' Robert Mitchell made two free throws for Seton Hall to tie the game with under 90 seconds to go, and Cunningham gave the 'Cats the lead for good with a pair from the stripe.

Harvey and Hazell each had opportunities to tie the game, but their attempts were unsuccessful, as Reynolds calmly drained four straight freebies to seal the win in the waning moments for Villanova.

A Cunningham three-pointer gave the Wildcats the biggest lead of the opening half, 27-20, with 6 1/2 minutes remaining before the break.

The Pirates rallied behind a trio of Hazell trifectas in the final three minutes and took a 37-35 advantage at the intermission.

Seton Hall came out of the locker room fired up and pushed its lead to 47-40 five minutes in. Reynolds, though, erupted for seven consecutive points in just over a one-minute span to tie the game.

'Nova opened up a 70-62 lead with 4:22 to play, but some time later Harvey scored five quick points and Garcia added a bucket to cut the deficit to 74-73 with 50 ticks remaining.

Reynolds came down and was fouled following his own miss and hit both free throws for a three-point lead. Hazell answered immediately by banking a deep trey off the glass for a tie game, 76-76, with less than 10 seconds remaining.

Reynolds' game-winning drive was disrupted by the defense and fell off the mark to send the game to an extra five-minute stanza.
