Rays sign Kapler

St. Petersburg, FL (Sports Network) - The Tampa Bay Rays have signed outfielder Gabe Kapler to a one-year contract.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Kapler came out of a one-year retirement and spent the 2008 season with Milwaukee. He batted .301 with eight homers, 38 runs batted in and a career- best .498 slugging percentage in 96 games.

The 33-year-old veteran was also Milwaukee's top pinch hitter last year with 10 hits, including two home runs, in 31 at-bats.

Kapler is a career .273 hitter with 72 homers and 340 RBI in 10 seasons with Detroit, Texas, Colorado, Boston and Milwaukee. He was a member of Boston's World Series championship team in 2004 and played parts of four seasons with the Red Sox before taking on a job as manager of their Class-A affiliate in 2007.
