Beavers hope to keep pace in Pac-10 title race

Wed 18th, November 2009

Pullman, WA (Sports Network) - The 20th-ranked Oregon State Beavers try to remain in the Pac-10 title race this weekend, as they take on the Washington State Cougars at Martin Stadium in Pullman.

The Beavers continued to roll last weekend, as they trounced Washington by a 48-21 score to complete their home slate. It was the third win in a row and the fifth in six games for OSU, which moved to the No. 20 spot in the national rankings at 7-3 overall.

What made last weekend's win even bigger was the fact that both USC and Arizona lost, and those were the only two teams to defeat OSU in seven league games this season. That means if the Beavers win their last two games and Arizona losses one of its next three, OSU would surprisingly earn the conference's bid to the Rose Bowl for the first time in 45 seasons. It would be a remarkable accomplishment for a team that was mostly an afterthought in the title race. The Beavers have league-leading Oregon in their final bout on December 3rd and that game could ultimately determine the league champion.

As for the Cougars, their miserable season continued over the weekend, as they were dismantled by UCLA, 43-7.

"We didn't come out very good in regards to turning the ball over, obviously," said head coach Paul Wulff. "The momentum that we thought we had, the kids were up emotionally, we had a week of practice, I really felt we were ready to play."

It was the seventh straight loss by WSU, which picked up its lone win over SMU in overtime all the back on September 19th. The Cougars are 0-7 within the conference and have lost every game by double figures.

In a series that dates back to 1903, WSU owns a 47-43-3 lead over the Beavers, although OSU has won two straight and four of the last five meetings.

The Beavers ran up 372 yards of offense and scored on their first seven possessions, as they coasted past Washington over the weekend. Jacquizz Rodgers turned in another big game on the ground for OSU, which rolled up 178 rushing yards, as he toted 18 times for 159 yards and two scores.

One of the most explosive players in the nation, Jacquizz has now topped the 1,000-yard plateau for the second year in a row, rushing for 1,148 yards and 17 touchdowns. He also ranks second on the team in catches (62) to brother James Rodgers, who has made 71 receptions for 832 yards and eight score. James also had a good game last weekend, pulling in five balls for 46 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Getting the ball to the Rodgers brothers is Sean Canfield, who threw for 185 yards and four touchdowns on an efficient 21-of-29 pass attempts last weekend.

"Yeah, it was obviously an emotional day, I think more for my parents than me'" said Canfield about the victory on senior day. "It hasn't really hit me yet that this was my last game in Reser Stadium but it was a big deal for me and the rest of the seniors to go out on top."

Canfield has done a terrific job for OSU this season and has hit on nearly 70 percent of his pass attempts, with 17 touchdowns against only five interceptions.

OSU's defense was superb last weekend, keeping Washington to a mere 274 total yards, while forcing a pair of turnovers. The unit added three sacks and limited Washington just one touchdown through the first three quarters.

"Defensively, we were all over them and we never lost focus," said head coach Mike Riley. "[The game] seemed very workman like and passionate. They [the team] just kept going and making plays. It was fun to see."

The defense has really performed well down the stretch and has been stout versus the run, permitting just 102.4 ypg on the ground.

Keaton Kristick leads the defense in tackles with 55.5, to go with 6.5 TFLs, and Lance Mitchell has helped in the turnover department with three interceptions.

The Cougars have been just inept this season and last weekend was no exception, as the offense managed only 181 total yards and a touchdown in a blowout loss to UCLA. Quarterback Marshall Lobbestael got the start in place of the injured Jeff Tuel and he threw three interceptions in the first quarter.

"It killed our momentum, and we're not in a position right now to overcome a lopsided deficit," said coach Wulff.

Lobbestael was removed following his third pick and Kevin Lopina stepped in and finished the game, completing 7-of-14 pass attempts for 102 yards and a touchdown. It is anyone's guess as to who will start under center this weekend, but it probably won't even matter for an offense that is averaging a mere 262.8 total ypg, with 28 turnovers.

Jared Karstetter is the team's top target with 435 yard and six touchdowns on the campaign, and tailback Dwight Tardy paces the ground attack, which is averaging only 74.2 ypg, with 343 yards.

The Cougars' defense is just as bad as their offense and possibly worse. WSU is being torched for a whopping 511.6 total ypg and that includes 228.9 ypg on the ground. Opposing clubs are averaging 5.8 yards per carry against the Cougar defense, which has surrendered 29 touchdowns via the run.

Last weekend, WSU was gashed by UCLA's mediocre offense for 556 yards and five touchdowns. The unit gave up 232 of those yards and four scores on the ground, while spending nearly 36 minutes of the game on the field.

Alex Hoffman-Ellis had nine tackles and a fumble recover in the setback and he ranks second on the team in stops, with 62 for the season.
