University Park, PA (Sports Network) - Penn State head coach Joe Paterno named true freshman Robert Bolden the starting quarterback for Saturday's season opener versus Youngstown State.
The news came as a surprise considering Paterno's tendency to go with a veteran option, but with all three quarterbacks -- Bolden and sophomores Matt McGloin and Kevin Newsome -- void of playing experience, the iconic head coach specified Bolden's slight edge.
"Based on what we have seen to this point, Bolden has a slight edge right now, but we are confident all three quarterbacks are ready to go and hope to give them an opportunity to play until we settle on the one that gives us the best chance to win."
Paterno labled the quarterbacks 1A, 1B, and 1C on the depth chart and stated each still has the opportunity to earn the starting nod on a regular basis.
Bolden will be Penn State's first true freshman starting quarterback since Wally Richardson in 1992. The highly-touted recruit out of Orchard Lake, Michigan threw for 1,013 yards and ran for 535 yards with 16 total touchdowns during his senior season while leading St. Mary's Prep to the state finals.
