GAME NOTES: The Western Michigan Broncos will try to remain perfect in league play when they take on the Buffalo Bulls this Saturday at UB Stadium in a Mid- American Conference tilt. Since opening the year with a tough loss to Nebraska, the Broncos have been unstoppable, winning five consecutive games. This past weekend the Broncos stampeded the Ohio Bobcats, posting a 41-20 victory. The Broncos were just 3-4 this past season in league play, but thus far WMU has been one of the toughest teams in the MAC, winning all three of its conference matchups. As for the Bulls, they have lost three of their last four games, including two in a row. The last time Buffalo was on the gridiron, the Bulls suffered a very tough, 27-25 setback to the defending MAC champion Central Michigan Chippewas. Buffalo is 2-0 at home this season, but during the previous three years the Bulls were 5-10 at UB Stadium. The Broncos have dominated the all-time series against Buffalo, winning all three meetings, including a 31-21 victory over the Bulls back in 2005.

The Broncos are one of the more dangerous teams in the MAC and that is largely due to the success of the offense, which is producing 429.0 total ypg. Tim Hiller has been outstanding under center, completing 68.6 percent of his throws for 1,701 yards. The quarterback has already tossed 19 touchdowns, and has thrown just four interceptions at the same time. His main target has been Jamarko Simmons, who is leading the team with 43 receptions, 481 yards and five touchdowns. The ground game has also been impressive throughout the year, as the team is rumbling for 141.2 ypg. Brandon West has been the main option out of the backfield for WMU, as the tailback has rushed for 574 yards and four TDs. Hiller continued his tremendous play this past weekend against Ohio, as the quarterback threw for 347 yards and four touchdowns en route to a 21- point win over Ohio. West added 107 rushing yards and one score on the ground, and also caught four passes for 72 yards and two more TDs.

Defensively the Broncos have not been as sound, as Western Michigan is allowing 21.8 ppg, and 363.3 total ypg. The main problem for the Broncos has come against the pass, as opponents are torching the Broncos' backfield for 232.5 passing ypg. The defense has only forced 10 turnovers on the season, but the front line has done a terrific job pressuring opposing quarterbacks, racking up 15 sacks thus far. The majority of those sacks came this past weekend, as the Broncos grabbed five in the win over Ohio. WMU also forced three turnovers in the win, while limiting the Bobcats to just 356 total yards. Austin Pritchard collected eight tackles and one sack in the win, while Mario Armstrong and Louis Delmas both grabbed eight stops apiece.

Although the Bulls have a losing ledger, the team has performed at a high level offensively, racking up 380.6 total ypg which has led to 26.8 ppg. Drew Willy has been solid for the Bulls, as the quarterback has completed 63.6 percent of his passes for 1,299 yards. Willy has tossed 12 touchdowns in just five games and has thrown only three interceptions. Naaman Roosevelt has been the top target for Willy, as the wide out is pacing the team with 34 receptions, 518 yards and four touchdowns. Willy continued his strong play this past weekend, throwing for 270 yards and two touchdowns against Central Michigan. Despite his strong showing, the Bulls fell by a two-point margin. James Starks also had a good game, rushing for 94 yards and one score, while also grabbing five passes for 97 yards and another touchdown.

The play of the offense has been overshadowed by the poor performance of the Buffalo defensive unit, which is surrendering 28.2 ppg. Opponents are racking up 391.4 total ypg, and that includes a whopping 263.2 ypg via the pass. Making big plays has been another problem for this defense, as Buffalo has collected just nine turnovers and five sacks. The defense continued to struggle this past weekend, as the Bulls allowed 360 yards against CMU. Buffalo was pounded by the Chippewas' ground attack, surrendering 208 yards on 5.3 ypc. Central Michigan was able to force one turnover in the loss, but allowed CMU to convert on 9-of-15 third down attempts and all four of its red zone chances. Justin Winters was one of the few bright spots in the setback, collecting 14 tackles, while Mike Newton tallied 11 stops to go along with one TFL.

Buffalo should be able to post some points against the Broncos, but Western Michigan's offense is far too high-powered for the Bulls to contain. Expect the Broncos to remain undefeated in league play as they grab the win on the road.
