GAME NOTES: A couple of Golden State squads coming off season-opening defeats hit the field in Los Angeles this weekend, as the UCLA Bruins welcome the San Jose State Spartans to the Rose Bowl.
In the case of the Spartans, they saw the nation's longest losing streak stretch to 11 games last Saturday as they suffered a severe beat down from seventh-ranked Stanford, 57-3. SJSU, which finished the 2010 campaign a mere 1-12, with the lone victory coming against Southern Utah (16-11) in the third game of the campaign, hasn't beaten another member of the Football Bowl Subdivision since November 28, 2009 when it took down New Mexico State (13-10). That one triumph is the only win for the Spartans over a FBS program since the start of the 2009 season.
As for the Bruins, they too got off to a rough start last weekend as they suffered a 38-34 setback at Houston. The defeat was the fourth in a row for UCLA and the seventh in the last eight outings, with the lone win during that stretch coming against Oregon State (17-14) the first week of November last season.
Despite the fact that these two schools reside in the same state, this is the first time they have ever met on the gridiron.
Before the Spartans knew what hit them, they trailed by 27 points against the seventh-ranked school in the nation on Saturday, an 18-yard Harrison Waid goal in the second frame the only thing standing in the way of SJSU being shut out on the road. New quarterback Matt Faulkner connected on 14-of-26 passes for 184 yards, but was sacked twice, while on the other end of many of those throws was Noel Grigsby who reeled in eight balls for 82 yards to lead all receivers. Last season the Spartans were dead last in the Western Athletic Conference and 119th in the nation in rushing with just 78.5 ypg and not much has changed since then as the team produced a woeful 27 yards on 32 attempts in the opener. Clearly there are many areas that need to be cleaned up with this offense, but expect there to be quite a bit of growing pains as the Spartans groom a new signal-caller to take over the unit for the time being.
The Spartans knew what they were up against in the opener, specifically Heisman hopeful Andrew Luck who ended up converting 17-of-26 passes for 171 yards and a pair of touchdowns before taking a seat on the sidelines in the romp. The SJSU secondary allowed a total of 232 yards through the air, which was a step in the right direction actually, given that the group was responsible for permitting a whopping 260.5 ypg (111th in the nation) during the 2010 campaign. However, with the Cardinal easing up in the passing department, the run defense for SJSU was then put to the test and didn't perform all that well, allowing four touchdowns. Granted, the group did limit Stanford runners to just 141 yards on 40 attempts, but in the end the damage was already done. Vince Buhagiar was kept busy with a team-high 10 tackles, making 1.5 stops behind the line of scrimmage, but still the squad failed to record a single sack, also an issue for the 2010 edition of the Spartans as they averaged just 1.85 sacks per contest.
The good news for UCLA head coach Rick Neuheisel and his crew over the weekend was that they registered 554 yards of offense, the highest total since 2009, the bad news was that the effort went unrewarded as the team suffered the four-point loss on the road at Houston. Even worse for UCLA was the fact that starting quarterback Kevin Prince exited in the second quarter with a concussion after completing his three pass attempts. Richard Brehaut stepped in and converted 17-of-26 passes for 264 yards and a pair of TDs to try and bring the team back, but it wasn't enough. The backup signal-caller also ran the ball 13 times for 87 yards and a score. Johnathan Franklin led all rushers with 128 yards and one touchdown on 16 carries. It was the eighth 100-yard game of his career, tying him for 11th on that UCLA list. It also gave him 1,821 career yards, moving him into 18th place on that list. So, while Franklin showed that he could carry the load coming out of the backfield, the Bruins now have to prepare for this week's meeting as if Prince will not be the one handing the ball off since he is listed as questionable following his injury in the opener.
Searching for something positive to build on, in the second half UCLA's defense held Houston to 173 yards and just seven points, but that was only after the unit was scorched for 31 points in the opening 30 minutes of play. With Houston's Case Keenum back in the pocket for yet another year following a shortened 2010 campaign when he was injured in the meeting with this same UCLA group in the middle of September, the Bruins secondary knew it was going to be tested and it was, torched for 310 yards and a couple of touchdowns by the Houston gunslinger. Cassius Marsh managed to bring Keenum down behind the line of scrimmage one time, but that was about it for the pressure put on the signal-caller this time around. UCLA, which averaged only 2.1 sacks per game in 2010, has now recorded just one sack in each of the last four games. Another one of the positives the Bruins can take from the opener against the Cougars is that they allowed just 159 yards on the ground, a far cry from the 205.5 ypg permitted a year ago, although it must be noted that Houston is a pass-happy program to begin with.
Even though the Bruins will probably be operating with their backup quarterback this weekend, the team still showed in the opener that the offense can be fully functional, something SJSU didn't get a chance to display.
