GAME NOTES: The Kansas Jayhawks will venture into Atlanta this weekend to face the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in a non-conference clash between two undefeated teams.
Kansas is now 2-0 after a 45-42 win over Northern Illinois in a shootout. The Jayhawks scored a touchdown with 14 seconds left to earn the win and give head coach Turner Gill his first winning streak with the program. This week he'll try to replicate last season's upset win over then-No. 15 Georgia Tech, and it'll have to come with one of the youngest teams in college football. Kansas currently has 71 underclassmen on its roster, with eight true freshman making their career debuts in the first two games.
The Yellow Jackets have been dominant in their 2-0 start, beating Western Carolina by 42 points in the opener and handling Middle Tennessee by 28 last weekend. Georgia Tech hasn't been 3-0 since 2005, and is one of college football's hottest offensive teams heading into the third week of the season. This team goes for the throat early; the Yellow Jackets have scored on the first offensive play in each of their first two games and have outscored opponents 49-0 in the first quarter.
The series is tied 1-1 between Kansas and Georgia Tech, as the Jayhawks upset the Yellow Jackets 28-25 last year in Lawrence.
The Jayhawk offense came to life against Northern Illinois, generating 534 yards of total offense, including 110 yards rushing by running back James Sims and career high 281 yards passing for quarterback Jordan Webb. Sims has three touchdowns on the ground through two games and Webb has six through the air, as Kansas has posted 43.5 points per game and 490.5 yards of total offense. Kansas has featured a more explosive offense early in 2011, recording 10 plays of 20 yards or more with four of those plays going for touchdowns. Kansas had just 31 plays of 20 yards or more in 2011. Even with the big-play explosion in the first two games, the Jayhawks are committing to the run and reaping results. Kansas, which currently leads the Big 12 in rushing, rushed for 301 yards against McNeese State in the opener and had 253 against the Huskies.
Kansas faced a high-octane attack against Northern Illinois, and allowed 42 points with Husky quarterback Chad Harnish completing 27-of-33 passes for 315 yards and two touchdowns and running for three more. The Jayhawks will face a different offensive animal with Georgia Tech's triple-option, which is one of the nation's deadliest running attacks. Kansas has allowed 121 rushing yards per game in its two wins. Several players have had standout performances early in the season for the Jayhawks, most notably Toben Opurum at defensive end. Opurum has 5.5 tackles for loss for minus 14 yards, good for second in the Big 12.
The Georgia Tech running game is producing 339 rushing yards per game, which is currently third in the nation. While the level of competition has been relatively soft, the Yellow Jackets have dominated offensively the past two weeks by scoring 112 points, currently ranked second nationally in scoring offense and second in total offense. While all the focus seems to be on the run, especially with back Synjyn Days (73 yards per game and three touchdowns) leading the way, the passing attack has also been solid. Tevin Washington has completed 13-of-21 passes for 473 yards and five scores, while receiver Stephen Hill is averaging 153.5 yards receiving per game and has scored three touchdowns.
Defensively the Yellow Jackets will face their first true test of the season in the Jayhawks, who have emerged with an effective running attack to complement a young quarterback in the sophomore Webb. Georgia Tech is allowing 21 points per game and just 321 yards of total offense (125 rushing and 196 passing), albeit those numbers coming from performances against Western Carolina and Middle Tennessee. The defense is aware of Webb's ability, as the quarterback threw for three touchdowns in the Jayhawks' win over Georgia Tech last season.
Kansas is currently on a nine-game road losing streak, and is playing in the state of Georgia for the first time in school history. There is no secret to beating Georgia Tech; stopping the Rambling Wreck means stopping the run, which is easier said than done with the triple-option scheme. The Jayhawks' defensive effort against Northern Illinois wasn't encouraging, and this week the unit will be overwhelmed on the ground.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Georgia Tech 38, Kansas 24
