GAME NOTES: Hitting the road for the first time in 2011, the Washington State Cougars in fact play the first of three straight away games this weekend as they drop in on the San Diego State Aztecs at Qualcomm Stadium.

For the first time in 15 years, the Cougars managed to post back-to-back games with at least 50 points as they logged a lopsided 59-7 win over the UNLV Rebels last Saturday. A week earlier WSU picked up a season-opening 64-21 romp over Idaho State at home. Not only are the Cougars off to a 2-0 start for the first time since 2005, the team's 123 points in the first two games are the second-most points scored in a two-game span since the first two outings of the 1907 season.

As for the Aztecs, they are back on the West Coast after sweating out a 23-20 win versus Army in New York last weekend. San Diego State is 2-0 for the second straight season and just the second time in the last 17 years dating back to the 1994 campaign. With its most recent triumph, SDSU is the first program since Notre Dame in 2006 to defeat all three service academies (Navy and Air Force) in a 12-game stretch or less.

The Cougars won the only previous meeting between these two programs, a 45-17 triumph during the 2007 campaign.

There was no stopping the Washington State offense last Saturday, the squad scoring on its first five possessions and eventually rolling out to a 59-0 lead over the UNLV Rebels before the visitors actually put any points on the board. Marshall Lobbestael, who was filling in for an injured Jeff Tuel at quarterback, hit on 24-of-32 passes for 361 yards and five touchdowns and even backup Connor Halliday got in on the act with 110 yards and two scores in the second half as well. Jared Karstetter caught six balls for 66 yards and two scores and Marquess Wilson turned his five grabs into 102 yards and a TD. Lobbestael has seized the moment with his opportunity under center, throwing for a total of 591 yards and seven touchdowns, his production and accuracy giving him a passing efficiency rating of 217.15 entering play this week. Needless to say, WSU leads the nation in scoring with an average of 61.5 ppg, thanks to an astonishing 600 ypg of total offense.

While Washington State was scoring at will last Saturday in Pullman, the defense was teaching the Rebels a few lessons as well, holding the visitors to a mere nine first downs and just 158 yards of total offense on 54 offensive snaps. UNLV converted a mere 2-of-12 on third down and failed on all four attempts on fourth-down plays as well, giving the ball right back to the Cougars offense all night so they could continue to inflict damage. C.J. Mizell led the way for the Cougars with seven tackles and also recorded one forced fumble, while Matthew Bock was credited with one of the team's two sacks in the meeting. While the WSU offense has captured most of the spotlight early on, the defense for the Cougars can't be overlooked. However, some of the early returns on the defense can be directly attributed to how well the other half of the team has played, specifically the squad's run defense which has held opponents to just 60.5 ypg. The group has also logged 4.0 sacks per game and that's because Idaho State and UNLV had to drop back and put the ball in the air in order to try and compete.

The Aztecs scored 14 points in the first quarter against Army, the sixth straight game in which they've accomplished the feat, yet the visitors still had to hang on for the three-point win nonetheless. Quarterback Ryan Lindley, who made his 33rd consecutive start, threw for just 146 yards on 8-of-18 passes, but he did notch a touchdown pass for the 12th straight game and ran his streak to 98 consecutive pass attempts without an interception. Running back Ronnie Hillman posted his eighth 100-yard rushing game in just his 15th outing with SDSU, adding a pair of rushing touchdowns which means he now has six career games with at least two scores. For the SDSU offense the meeting with Army, while close at the end, represented the squad's third straight game in which they did not turn the ball over, marking the first time the program has strung together as many games without a miscue in a span of 488 Division I games (dating back to 1969).

The run defense for the Aztecs was a bit sloppy against the Black Knights, giving up a staggering 403 yards and three touchdowns on the ground. However, it must be noted that, like both Navy and Air Force, Army is primarily a running team and only puts the ball in the air in dire circumstances and even then the Black Knights rarely take such chances. Because the Knights completed just two passes on the day, it is easy to see how the SDSU pass defense now ranks first in the Mountain West Conference and sixth in the country with a paltry 95.0 ypg allowed. Guaranteed that number will inflate after this weekend especially with Lobbestael dropping back for the Cougars. With three fumble recoveries versus Army the Aztecs boosted their turnover margin to a plus-2.0 per game in the early going which is a good sign considering the team was seventh in the conference and 86th nationally last year with minus-0.46 turnovers per game.

Both of these defenses are going to be stretched to the limit this weekend, especially if Lindley is able to get on track. Expect more than a few points to be scored and the Cougars to show why they've been so powerful early on.
