GAME NOTES: For just the second time ever the Falcons and Cowboys will take to the football field when Wyoming invades Bowling Green's Perry Stadium this Saturday afternoon.

The only other matchup took place in 2008 and in that meeting the Falcons clobbered Wyoming 45-16.

For the first time under the tutelage of coach David Christensen the Pokes have opened a season with two straight wins. Wyoming claimed only three wins a year ago, so the quick start is just what the coach wanted and the fans needed in Laramie. The Cowboys opened the season with a narrow, 35-32 decision over Weber State, and followed that with a 45-10 decision over Texas State. This will be the team's first matchup against a FBS squad in 2011.

The Falcons are also off to a fast start and have already equaled their win total from a year ago. Coach Dave Clawson and his squad stumbled through a 2-10 season in 2010, but now this year's bunch looks hungry and is showing it on the field. The first win for BGSU came on the road, as the Falcons defeated Idaho, 32-15. That was followed by a 58-13 decision over Morgan State this past Saturday.

The Cowboys are not hiding their offensive scheme, as they intend to run and run often. In their first two games Wyoming is averaging 275.5 yards per matchup and have found the end zone seven times via the run.

Ghaali Muhammad led the way in the win with 123 yards and one score, while Brandon Miller helped out with 101 yards and one touchdown in only 11 totes. Quarterback Brett Smith even got involved in the rushing attack, rumbling for 73 yards, while finding the end zone twice.

Smith got involved with his arm as well, finishing with 236 yards and one touchdown pass, but connected on just 16-of-31 passes and was intercepted twice.

Wyoming has surrendered 42 points in its first two games, and the team has yet to face a team from the FBS.

This past weekend the defense for coach Christensen played much better than the opener, and held Texas State to under 200 total yards. After allowing over 200 rushing yards in the win over Weber State, the defensive front was much better against Texas State, allowing just 77 yards on just 2.3 yards per attempt.

A big reason for BGSU's fast start is the offense, which has scored 90 combined points against Idaho and Morgan State.

In 2010, Matt Schilz threw just 14 touchdowns passes, but the sophomore already has seven tin 2011, against only one interception. He has completed 64.8 percent of his throws and it would appear the experience of last season is paying off.

In the win over Morgan State, Schilz threw five touchdowns and finished with 258 yards on only 16-of-23 passing. Four of those touchdown passes went to Eugene Cooper, who finished with 134 yards on six receptions.

Making this a balanced attack is a ground game that has been outstanding. Over the past two seasons the Falcons averaged less than 100 yards per game.

Through two games thus far BGSU, is producing 227.5 yards per matchup. The Falcons simply dominated Morgan State for 268 yards. Anthon Samuel led the way with 122 yards and one score on only 11 carries, while Jordan Hopgood helped out with 90 yards and one touchdown.

Samuel is averaging 8.0 yards per attempt and if he can continue to produce at a high level than Bowling Green should keep up the winning.

Scoring points is only half of the game. For a team to be truly successful the defense must also show up on a regular basis. Last year that was not the case for BGSU, which allowed over 30.0 ppg.

So far the defense has put forth a better effort in 2011, but there are still issues against the run. Against Morgan State, the Falcons were gashed for 156 yards and one score on 4.6 yards per attempt. BGSU will need to shore that up after allowing over 200 rushing yards per game a year ago.

The Cowboys have excelled on the ground, so this should be a good test for the Falcons.

Neither team has taken on high caliber opponents, so it is unclear just how good either is. The difference in this game could come down to turnovers and if that is the case than BGSU has the upper hand going in.
