GAME NOTES: The Colorado State Rams will face an old regional rival this weekend when they travel to Logan to meet the Utah State Aggies in non- conference action.

Colorado State played catch-up all second half last week against in-state rival Colorado, and after pulling within 21-14 early in the fourth quarter, gave up a 16-play, 85-yard Buffaloes drive that chewed 10 minutes of clock and resulted in a touchdown with just 1:15 left. That sealed Colorado State's first loss of the season. The Rams' road trip to Logan marks the only time the team will leave the state of Colorado in a six-week span, including the last two games against Northern Colorado and Colorado. Colorado State's next road game is October 22nd at UTEP.

Utah State wasn't about to have a letdown September 10th in a 54-17 win over FCS opponent Weber State, only a week after the Aggies nearly shocked defending national champion Auburn on the road, falling 42-38. It's homecoming week at Utah State, and there is plenty of excitement surrounding this program even though it is just 1-1. The competition promises to be challenging the next two weeks in non-league play, with the Rams visiting this weekend and the Aggies traveling to BYU next weekend.

Colorado State leads the all-time series 34-30-2, and has won the last three meetings.

The Rams were held to just 67 yards rushing against the Buffaloes, and relied on quarterback Pete Thomas and his 157 yards as their primary source of offense. Tight end Crockett Gillmore had solid game, catching five balls for 84 yards and a touchdown, but it is evident that Colorado State needs to rejuvenate its run game if it wants to go places this year. Colorado State is averaging 20.3 points per game and 338 yards of total offense per game, with 133.7 rushing yards per game. Thomas has been sacked 14 times in three games, and the Rams are 7-of-11 in red zone scoring. Thomas is completing over 70 percent of his passes, and has thrown for 594 yards and two touchdowns, while Carter Raymond has been the leading rusher with 58.7 yards per game and two touchdowns.

Defensive end Nordly Capi leads the nation in sacks with 6.5, and leads a unit that has played to mixed results the last three weeks. It gave up 329 yards of total offense to New Mexico, had three takeaways and forced the Lobos to go just 5-of-17 on third down to help grind out a 14-10 win. Against Colorado, the unit gave up 360 yards of total offense on a day when its offense was struggling, and allowed 6.7 yards per carry. The dagger came when the Buffaloes used an impressively long scoring drive in the fourth quarter to win the game. The unit has given up 17.3 points per game and 301.7 yards of total offense (141.3 rushing, 160.3 yards passing.)

Utah State dropped 38 points on Auburn on opening day, catching the country's attention. The catalyst to a successful offensive start through two games has been running back Robert Turbin, who is rushing for 125 yards per game, which leads the WAC and is good for 11th in the nation. Freshman quarterback Chuckie Keaton has proved to be a versatile player who is averaging 232.5 yards of total offense per game (189.5 yards passing per game), completing 68.9 percent of his passes with two touchdowns. The offense also has a real weapon in wide receiver and kick returner Kerwynn Williams, who is putting up 155.5 all purpose yards per game. Utah State is averaging 541.5 yards of total offense (333.5 rushing) and put up 635 yards of total offense in its last game against Weber State.

The Aggies' defense has only played two games against two vastly different caliber opponents, but the bottom line is that it is sixth in the country in rushing defense, allowing just 62 yards per game and is giving up just 288.5 yards per game of total offense. This is a unit that held Auburn to a modest 364 yards of total offense, while forcing the Tigers into 3-of-9 on third down. Utah State has a pair of linebackers who form one of the WAC's best duos in 2011, with Bobby Wagner and Josh Thompson combining for 18.5 tackles through the first two games.

In a battle of agricultural schools, its Utah State's stock that is rising while Colorado State's plummeted after barely beating New Mexico and going stagnant offensively against Colorado. The Buffaloes were able to control the line of scrimmage and play keep away a week ago against the Rams, a strategy that Utah State employed perfectly against Auburn in a near classic upset. The Aggies are lethal on the ground behind Turbin and Keaton, and Williams is a factor in the return game. Should the defense step up and stop Thomas as Colorado did, this one goes to Utah State.

Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Utah State 28, Colorado State 24
