GAME NOTES: SEC foes will collide in Oxford on Saturday, as the Ole Miss Rebels play host to the Georgia Bulldogs.

Georgia opened the season with back-to-back games against elite opponents, and after being outclassed by Boise State in a 14-point loss, Mark Richt's group fell narrowly to South Carolina in week two. To the credit of the Bulldogs, they picked themselves up and handled Coastal Carolina last week by a 59-0 final. Richt has been a lighting rod of criticism because of the program's failure to compete for the SEC title in recent years, and a win this weekend is essential.

Houston Nutt is also under fire for the performance of his Ole Miss squad, especially after last week's 30-7 beating at the hands of the Vanderbilt Commodores, a team that won only two games last season. The lone victory thus far for the Rebels came over Southern Illinois, an FCS club. Three of the next four games for Nutt's squad, including this weekend's tilt, will take place at home, so this is the ideal time to turn things around.

Georgia owns a 30-12-1 series advantage over Ole Miss, and the conference foes haven't squared off since 2007.

Richt is fortunate to have one of the best young quarterbacks in college football in Aaron Murray. Georgia is generating 40.7 ppg and 426.3 total ypg, thanks in large part to Murray's efforts. The sophomore has completed 63.1 percent of his passes for 672 yards with nine touchdowns against two interceptions. Malcolm Mitchell has 14 catches for 159 yards and two scores, while Isaiah Crowell paces the ground attack with 264 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

In the romp over Coastal Carolina, Murray completed 18-of-26 passes for 188 yards and three touchdowns with zero interceptions. Tavarres King had a pair of touchdown receptions, and Crowell ran for a score. Georgia was 10-of-18 on third-down conversion attempts and held the ball for over 34 minutes.

Opponents are posting 26.7 ppg and just 299.0 total ypg against a solid Georgia defense certainly helped its averages in last week's shutout of Coastal Carolina. The fact that the Bulldogs are yielding only 8.5 yards per pass completion speaks to how when the secondary has played, as the club has as many interceptions (four) as passing scores. Christian Robinson paces the Dawgs with 21 total tackles, including 3.0 TFLs.

Last week, the Bulldogs limited the Chanticleers to 112 total yards, including a staggering average of 3.5 yards per pass completion. Coastal Carolina was only able to make good on 3-of-16 third-down conversion attempts.

It is hard to overstate just how poorly Ole Miss played in the 23-point loss to Vanderbilt. The Rebels came dangerously close to being shut out, as their lone points came on a 47-yard touchdown pass from Zack Stoudt to Donte Moncrief with 2:15 remaining. Stoudt was downright horrendous in the tilt, as he was intercepted five times. One of those picks was returned for a touchdown, and the Ole Miss offense finished with a meager total of 234 yards after going 4-of-14 on third-down conversion attempts.

The defensive effort by Ole Miss against Vanderbilt certainly could have been better. Sure, Stoudt and the offense put the defense in bad situations throughout the contest, but the Rebels still yielded three rushing touchdowns, including a 77-yard burst in the third quarter that crushed any remaining hope.

Through three contests, Ole Miss is scoring 20.7 ppg while gaining 252.3 total ypg, numbers that simply aren't good enough, especially for an SEC team. The club is rushing for only 3.3 ypc and has turned the ball over eight times. Stoudt is not getting the job done under center, but he still may be the best option the team has.

Foes are generating 22.7 ppg and 374.3 total ypg against Ole Miss, which is giving up a lofty 5.0 yards per rushing attempt. The pass defense has been far better, notching six interceptions while permitting only three touchdowns. Just four sacks have been posted thus far, however.

Georgia is a better team than Ole Miss and will get the job done on the road. It is hard to imagine Nutt returning to coach the Rebels next season, as the Oxford faithful love their team and can't take much more losing.
