GAME NOTES: For the first time ever, the Miami-Florida Hurricanes and Kansas State Wildcats will meet on the gridiron, as the two are set for a non- conference clash at Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens.
Kansas State is off to a 2-0 start after last Saturday's 37-0 triumph over Kent State. It was an encouraging performance by the offense after the team scratched and clawed its way to a 10-7 home win over FCS foe Eastern Kentucky in the season opener two weeks prior. This weekend's tilt will be the Wildcats' lone road game sandwiched in between four home dates to start the 2011 campaign.
After dropping their season opener at Maryland on September 5, the Hurricanes rebounded with an impressive 24-6 win over 17th-ranked Ohio State last Saturday. They looked sharp and focused coming off a bye week, and the result was the program's first win over a ranked opponent since a 21-20 win over then-No. 8 Oklahoma on October 3, 2009. Following this tilt, the 'Canes will host Bethune-Cookman next weekend before resuming ACC play a week later at Virginia Tech.
If the win over Kent State was any indication, Kansas State seems to have knocked off any rust that was evident in that ugly 10-7 win over Eastern Kentucky to start the season. In that game, the Wildcats escaped with the victory only after scoring a touchdown with 1:39 remaining to atone for four lost fumbles. But against the Golden Flashes, they looked sharp on both sides of the ball. The offense scored on five of six first-half drives to build a 34-0 lead, and that would be plenty for the Wildcats to notch the victory. Quarterback Collin Klein was the spark plug, as he nearly became the school's first quarterback since Allen Webb in 2004 to eclipse 100 yards passing and rushing in a game. Klein ran for 139 yards and two scores, while he also passed for 74 yards and a TD. Outside of the quarterback, however, the rest of the backs managed only 80 yards on the ground. Against the speedier Hurricanes defense, K-State will need a more well-rounded effort.
The Wildcats' shutout win was the program's first since 2006 against Florida Atlantic. David Garrett set the tone with a 45-yard interception return for a touchdown a little over two minutes into the contest. For the game, the defense held Kent State to 12 first downs and only 199 total yards. Junior linebacker Arthur Brown was all over the field, notching a game-high 12 tackles, including two for loss. After two games, K-State leads the nation in both total defense (164 ypg) and scoring defense (3.5 ppg). Of course, those numbers come with a caveat, as Eastern Kentucky plays in the FCS and Kent State owns the second-worst offense in the Football Bowl Subdivision in terms of yardage. While last Saturday's victory served as a nice momentum booster heading into this matchup, the Hurricanes will present a stark contrast in terms of offensive ability.
On Miami's first play from scrimmage in last week's marquee showdown with Ohio State, Lamar Miller found a seam and went for 54 yards to give the Hurricanes an early boost. Three plays later, the Hurricanes found the end zone to take a 7-0 lead, and they kept the momentum for the better part of four quarters, as Miller went on to gash the Buckeyes' defense for 188 yards on the ground. Jacory Harris completed 16-of-23 passes for 123 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Both of his TD passes came in the first quarter and went to Allen Hurns, who finished with 54 yards on six catches. UM was 4-of-4 in the red zone and is a perfect 7-of-7 on the year. The offense was able to keep the chains moving by converting 9-of-15 third downs en route to a nine-minute advantage in time of possession.
The last time Ohio State was held without a touchdown was back in 2008, as Miami's defense limited the Buckeyes to only 209 total yards. And before Miami's Darius Smith sacked OSU quarterback Braxton Miller to end the first quarter, the Buckeyes had not allowed a sack in any of their last 95 pass attempts, which was the third-longest streak in the FBS at the time. The 'Canes kept the pressure up all game long in holding OSU quarterbacks to 4- of-18 passing, the program's fewest completions allowed since holding Wake Forest to three completions in '08. The Buckeyes had only four passing yards at the half and ended the night with a mere 35 yards. They got into the red zone twice, but Miami's defense held them to two field goals. After being a bit too generous in a season-opening 32-24 loss at Maryland, the 'Canes had two weeks of practice to prepare for the Buckeyes, and it certainly showed in the end result.
Both teams are coming off solid performances on both sides of the ball, although Miami's performance came against a much more reputable program. Expect the Hurricanes to build on that momentum with another home win.
