GAME NOTES: Fresh off their first win of the season, the Duke Blue Devils turn their attention to the visiting Tulane Green Wave for a non-conference bout at Wallace Wade Stadium.

Last weekend, Duke rallied from a 12-point deficit to knock off Boston College in its ACC opener, 20-19, thanks to a late missed field goal by Eagles. It marked the first time the Blue Devils won their first road game since 1981, although they have lost both of their home games so far this season. Following this weekend's tilt, they'll hit the road again to face Florida International next Saturday before resuming ACC play with three straight home games.

The Green Wave improved to 2-1 with last Saturday's 49-10 rout at UAB. Tulane made plays on both sides of the ball to atone for an ugly 31-3 home loss to Tulsa a week early in the Conference USA opener. This will be the second game in a three-game road swing for the Green Wave, who next play at Army on October 1.

Tulane is 2-0 in the all-time series with Duke, although this marks the first meeting between the two schools since 1973.

Tulane's junior quarterback Ryan Griffin tied a career-best with three touchdown passes in last Saturday's victory. Griffin completed an efficient 22-of-26 passes for 281 yards, spreading the ball to 11 different receivers. He did not toss an interception and was not sacked in the contest. However, Orleans Darkwa did not have the same type of success on the ground, as he was bottled up to only 64 yards on 20 carries (3.2 ypc), although he did find the end zone twice. Still, Tulane went on to hold a 28-10 edge in first downs and a 540-193 advantage in total offense. Through three games, Darkwa is averaging just 50.3 rushing yards per game and a mere 3.2 ypc. Griffin has shouldered the load, averaging 239.3 passing yards per contest with six touchdowns and only one interception. His favorite target has been Joe Kemp, who has caught 14 passes for 161 yards and a score.

The Green Wave defense got in on the fun against UAB, as junior middle linebacker Trent Mackey and sophomore defensive back Derrick Strozier each returned an interception for a touchdown. For Strozier, it was his second interception of the year. Those big plays helped Tulane to its largest margin of victory in C-USA play since the league's inception in 1996. The defense came away with three turnovers in all against the Blazers, and they held UAB to just 10 first downs and 193 yards of total offense. UAB's possession time was only 18:03, compared to 41:57 for Tulane. It marked the first time the Green Wave held an opponent to less than 200 yards of total offense since limiting ULM to 182 on September 20, 2008. UAB's 48 rushing yards was the fewest allowed by Tulane since giving up a mere 23 at Rice on November 17, 2007. Mackey added a team-high nine tackles to go along with his interception return. He leads the squad with 35 tackles, including 3.0 for loss.

Duke quarterback Sean Renfree threw for 359 yards and two touchdowns, and he also scored the go-ahead touchdown on a one-yard run in last week's win over Boston College. Renfree tied a school record with 40 completions in leading the Blue Devils to their first victory of the year, while Conner Vernon caught both touchdown passes and finished with 116 yards on six catches. However, all of that would have went for naught if BC kicker Nate Freese didn't bounce a 23-yard field-goal attempt off the left upright with 43 seconds remaining in regulation. The Blue Devils left some points on the board, as they racked up 465 yards of total offense but managed only one touchdown in three trips to the red zone. Expect head coach David Cutcliffe to dedicate some extra practice time this week to the red-zone offense.

Duke's defense didn't have to deal with Eagles' star running back Montel Harris, who missed his third straight game with a knee injury. Still, the defense did its part in limiting BC to 81 rushing yards. Boston College quarterback Chase Rettig found some windows in Duke's defense as he finished with 247 yards and a touchdown on 17-of-33 passing. Kenny Anunike supplied most of the pressure for Duke, as he notched three tackles for loss, including two sacks. Ross Cockrell and Matt Daniels shared team-high honors with nine tackles apiece in the win. Daniels leads the team with 31 tackles and six pass breakups, while Anunike has already compiled four sacks in only three games. However, the Blue Devils need to find a way to keep the opposition off the scoreboard, as they rank second-to-last in the ACC in scoring defense (28.7 ppg).

Tulane is coming off its most lopsided win since topping ULM by 43 points in October of 2003. However, the Green Wave now must try to accomplish the rare feat of winning back-to-back road games, and against an unfamiliar opponent. These teams share similar offensive styles, and this game could be decided by whichever defense makes the most big plays. Give a slight edge to the Blue Devils playing at home and coming off an emotional victory.
