GAME NOTES: The UCLA Bruins bust into Corvallis this weekend for a Pac-12 matchup with the winless Oregon State Beavers, in the league opener for both teams.

UCLA had envisioned taking down Texas for a second year in a row last weekend, but the Longhorns had other ideas at the Rose Bowl, winning 49-20 and handing the Bruins their second loss of the season. That wasn't the type of segue UCLA wanted heading into this weekend's matchup with Oregon State, marking the beginning of what will be a challenging Pac-12 conference season.

The Beavers have been reeling since a season-opening loss to FCS opponent Sacramento State. After being shut out by Wisconsin on September 10th, Oregon State had a bye last weekend and can only hope it will re-energize the team heading into this weekend's league opener. Arizona State, Arizona and BYU follow this weekend's matchup for the Beavers.

UCLA leads the all-time series 40-15-4, including a 17-14 win over the Beavers last year.

After missing most of the first two games with a concussion, quarterback Kevin Prince returned to start at quarterback against Texas in place for Richard Brehaut, and neither yielded the kind of results that UCLA was hoping for against a Top-25 opponent. Prince threw three interceptions in the first quarter and Brehuat finished with just 150 yards passing for the Bruins, who finished with just 317 yards of total offense. Brehuat has completed 37-of-68 passes for 559 yards with three touchdowns on the year. Johnathan Franklin, held to just 58 yards rushing against Texas, is averaging 89 yards rushing per game and has two touchdowns. UCLA is averaging 429 yards of total offense per game, and although the unit has been turnover prone, has given up only one sack through three games.

The Bruins allowed 488 yards of total offense to Texas, including 284 yards rushing, and has given up 104 points in its first three games. The unit is allowing nearly identical numbers to its own offense's production; surrendering 215 yards rushing per game, 209 yards passing per game and an average of 424.7 yards of total offense. There is no doubt that UCLA has faced high profile offenses from both Houston and Texas in the first three games, and the Bruins will rely on middle linebacker Pat Larimore (21 tackles) and senior safety Tony Dye (19 tackles) to lead this unit to better numbers in Pac-12 play.

Oregon State's offense was shut out against Wisconsin two weeks ago, and has posted just 28 points this season against an FCS opponent. Quarterbacks Sean Mannion and Ryan Matz have played in both games, completing a combined 46- of-75 for 491 yards with no touchdowns. Malcolm Agnew leads the offense with 223 yards rushing for three touchdowns for a team averaging 144.5 yards per game on the ground and 390 yards of total offense for game. The team hasn't exactly been turnover prone (two fumbles) but has failed to convert touchdowns in the red zone (two of six).

The Beaver defense was shredded by both the Sacramento State and Wisconsin offenses, and the averages don't lie: 139.5 yards rushing per game, 242.5 passing yards per game and a total of 64 points allowed in two games. The numbers aren't staggering, but enough to contribute to the Beavers' 0-2 record. Oregon State allowed 208 yards rushing to Wisconsin, and didn't have an answer for the Badgers in the red zone, as Wisconsin scored five-of-five touchdowns deep inside Beaver territory.

Oregon State projects to be better than it has shown. This is a well-coached squad under Mike Riley, and expect for drastic improvement following a bye. The run game has potential behind Agnew, and being at home for the Pac-12 opener should boost the defense. UCLA is a struggling program that has been keeping its head above water against Houston, San Jose State and Texas in the first three games. Give a slight edge to Oregon State.
