GAME NOTES: The Arizona Wildcats will invade the Coliseum on Saturday afternoon to do battle with the USC Trojans in Pac-12 Conference action.
Arizona is hoping to avoid an 0-3 start to conference play, as the team has dropped back-to-back decisions to Stanford and Oregon in lopsided fashion. The 56-31 setback to the Ducks last weekend was clearly disappointing and marked the team's third consecutive setback by at least 23 points. The only win to date for Mike Stoops' team came in the opener over FCS foe Northern Arizona.
As for the Trojans, they opened the season with three consecutive victories, all of which came at home. The club hit the road for the first time last weekend to take on Arizona State, but things went terribly wrong from the outset in a 43-22 letdown. Lane Kiffin has a tough schedule ahead, so he needs to get his troops over that initial loss in a hurry.
USC owns a 27-7 series lead over Arizona, which includes a 24-21 triumph over the Wildcats last season.
Sure, he has been on the losing end of three of his team's four games thus far, but Arizona quarterback Nick Foles remains one of the best signal callers in all of college football. Foles has completed 70.5 percent of his passes for 1,447 yards with 10 touchdowns and zero interceptions, impressive numbers by any standards. Despite missing one of the team's four games, Juron Criner has 21 receptions for 295 yards and two scores. Unfortunately for Arizona, which is averaging 24.0 ppg, the ground attack has been non-existent, accounting for a mere 62.2 ypg at a clip of 2.5 yards per carry.
Against Oregon last week, Arizona posted 480 total yards and held possession for nearly 35 minutes. Foles was highly impressive as usual, completing 34- of-57 passes for 398 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. Criner made nine catches, but the ground attack was weak again and Foles was sacked five times.
Opponents are scoring 35.0 ppg against the Wildcats, who are yielding 484.0 total ypg. They have proven to be weak against both the run and the pass, surrendering 233.5 rushing ypg at a clip of 6.2 ypc. Foes have already notched 11 rushing touchdowns against Arizona, as well as seven passing scores and 250.5 ypg through the air. While the 'Cats have only notched three sacks of their own, they have surrendered 12 sacks to opponents.
A total of 516 yards were permitted to Oregon in last week's loss, including a staggering total of 415 rushing yards. The Ducks pounded out 8.8 yards per rushing attempt against a group of Wildcats that looked downright helpless for much of the clash.
USC is generating 25.5 ppg and 422.5 total ypg this season, and two-thirds of the yardage has come via the passing attack. Arizona isn't the only team with a star quarterback in the fold, as Matt Barkley has been tremendous for the Trojans. Barkley has completed 67.8 percent of his passes for 1,119 yards with 10 touchdowns and three interceptions. Robert Woods leads the passing attack with 41 catches for 492 yards and four touchdowns, impressive considering the fact that no other player on the roster has more than 13 grabs. As for the running game, Marc Tyler has posted 303 yards and two scores despite missing a game due to suspension.
Defensively, the Trojans are allowing 22.8 ppg and 336.0 total ypg, numbers than can undoubtedly stand some improvement. Clearly, the figures were much more impressive before last weekend's disappointing showing against the Sun Devils. While USC is permitting only 108.2 ypg at a clip of 3.7 yards per carry, the team is surrendering 227.8 ypg through the air with only one interception. Dion Bailey paces the defense with 26 total tackles.
The fact that USC fell to Arizona State last weekend for the first time since the 90s is certainly notable. The Trojans won the total yardage battle by a 402-392 margin, but they turned the ball over four times, including a pair of Barkley interceptions. USC failed to force a single turnover and finished 1- of-9 on third-down conversion attempts, the most obvious reasons for the setback.
Expect plenty of points this weekend, as both Barkley and Foles are capable of lighting up the scoreboard. Woods and Criner are among the best receivers in the nation, so seeing them on the same field is a treat. When the dust settles, expect the Trojans to finish on top by a narrow margin, mainly because the Wildcats simply cannot run the ball.
