GAME NOTES: The Marshall Thundering Herd will visit Papa John's Cardinal Stadium on Saturday afternoon in search of their first road win of the season, as they take on the Louisville Cardinals in a non-conference tussle.

The Thundering Herd have lost both of their road matchups so far by a combined score of 78-20. Overall, they have dropped each of their last two games, including last Saturday's 30-10 home loss to Virginia Tech. Marshall resumes Conference USA play next weekend at UCF, and a win here would certainly provide a nice confidence boost entering that contest.

Meanwhile, Louisville will have had two full weeks to prepare for this bout, as the Cardinals were last in action on September 17 at Kentucky. They notched a 24-17 victory in that game to move to 2-1 on the season. After this week's tilt, they'll travel to North Carolina next Saturday before opening Big East play the following week.

Louisville owns a 16-11 edge in the head-to-head series with Marshall, although this marks the first meeting between the two schools since 2002.

Four games into the season, and Marshall's offense is still a work in progress. The Herd rank 112th out of 120 FBS schools in total offense (286.8 ypg), and they rank 113th in scoring offense (14.0 ppg). Over their last two games, the Herd have totaled just 17 points and lost both rather handily. Last weekend, they found very little running room against the Hokies' stout defense. Marshall was held to a mere six rushing yards on 24 attempts (0.2 ypc) against the Hokie defense, which ranks second in the nation. Aaron Dobson finished with 103 yards and a touchdown on five catches, while Rakeem Cato completed 17-of-33 passes for 245 yards with one touchdown and one interception. However, Cato had very little time to operate in the pocket, as he was sacked five times. For the game, Marshall converted only 3-of-15 third downs and made just one trip to the red zone, which resulted in no points. Obviously, those kinds of numbers turn the offense into a one-dimensional unit, which head coach Doc Holliday acknowledged is a hard way to win at the FBS level. Expect the Herd to try and strike a better run-pass balance this week.

Defensively, Marshall allowed a staggering 215 yards and four touchdowns on the ground (5.2 ypc), as the Hokies routinely reeled off huge chunks of yardage in the running game. The struggles in that department carried over from the previous week's loss at Ohio University, where Marshall was gashed for 271 rushing yards and a pair of scores (4.9 ypc). If the Herd plan on making some noise in C-USA this season, improving their run defense is a top priority. They also need to improve their defensive red zone efficiency after allowing Tech to come away with touchdowns on four of its six trips inside the 20-yard line. Of course, field position also played a role, as the Hokies' average starting field position was the 37-yard line, thus putting extra pressure on Marshall's defense. Senior safety Omar Brown notched 17 tackles and a forced fumble in the setback, and he ranks among the C-USA leaders with 44 stops on the season. Monterius Lovett had a hand in both takeaways with a fumble recovery and his second interception of the year.

Louisville's offense has yet to really take off with an average of 20.7 ppg, which ranks 100th nationally. Will Stein is averaging 205 ypg and has completed 62 percent of his passes with five touchdowns and only one interception. However, he hasn't gotten much help from the running game, as the Cardinals are averaging just 3.6 yards per carry as a team and have notched only one touchdown on the ground. Until they can get their ground game going, defenses can pin their ears back and really go after Stein, who was knocked out of the Kentucky game in the second quarter. UofL quarterbacks have already taken 11 sacks in three games. Head coach Charlie Strong has said that Stein will start against Marshall despite the strong play of highly-regarded freshman Teddy Bridgewater, who replaced Stein at Kentucky and led the Cards to victory with a pair of 25-yard touchdown passes. Stein said he does not believe a player should lose his starting spot because of injury. Then again, if the Cardinals do not shore up their pass protection, it could only be a matter of time before Bridgewater sees the field again.

On the defensive side of the ball, Louisville's strength has been against the run, as the unit ranks 11th in the nation and second in the conference in run defense (74.3 ypg). Ever since allowing Murray State's Mike Harris to run for 116 yards and a touchdown in the season opener, the Cardinals have allowed a total of only 80 rushing yards on 58 attempts (1.4 ypc) over the last two games. They have also not allowed a rushing touchdown in that span. This week, the Cards are no doubt licking their chops at the prospects of facing a Marshall team that has generated hardly any offensive production on the ground. If that continues here, Louisville could take control of this contest rather quickly by putting Cato into some difficult down and distances. In their last outing, the Cardinals effectively took away Kentucky's ground game and went on to sack Wildcat quarterback Morgan Newton six times. Dexter Heyman led the way with 12 tackles and a forced fumble in that game, while Adrian Bushell notched 11 stops.

On paper, this matchup plays right into Louisville's hands. Then again, games aren't won on paper. Still, if the Herd have any hopes of winning on the road, they must get something going on the ground to keep Louisville's defense off balance.
