GAME NOTES: The Arizona Wildcats will head north this weekend to Corvallis for a Pac-12 clash with the Oregon State Beavers, as both teams look to rebound from disastrous starts to the 2011 campaign.
Arizona has lost four consecutive games since beating FCS-foe Northern Arizona in the opener, including three straight to Pac-12 opponents in Stanford, Oregon and USC. Despite having a potent offense capable of putting up massive amounts of points, the defense is one of the country's worst at the moment. The Wildcats are also one of the most penalized teams in the country, averaging 8.6 flags a game. Following its road trip to Corvallis, Arizona will have a bye and then take on UCLA at home and Washington in Seattle to close the October slate.
Oregon State has lost six straight games dating back to the 2010 season. The Beavers have dropped their first two Pac-12 games of the season, losing to UCLA and Arizona State in the last two weekends. Oregon State will wrap up its non-conference schedule October 15th against BYU.
Arizona leads the all-time series 21-12-2, although Oregon State beat the Wildcats 29-27 last year in Tucson.
The Wildcat offense is led by quarterback Nick Foles, who leads a team that is third nationally in passing offense with 384 yards per game. Foles is completing 72 percent of his passes and has thrown for 1,877 yards and 14 touchdowns through five games.
The top receiver thus far is Dan Buckner, who has caught 25 balls for 343 yards and one touchdown in 2011. Receiver Juron Criner and David Roberts have 24 receptions apiece, and David Douglas and Gino Crump have 23 apiece. Criner has three touchdown catches. The rushing attack only averages 75.6 yards per game, with Keola Antolin leading all rushers with 53.4 yards per game and two touchdowns in five games.
Arizona is 16-of-20 in the red zone this season, with 14 of those scores being touchdowns. Foles led the Wildcats to score five touchdowns in five red zone trips last weekend against USC.
Arizona's defense was torched last weekend by USC quarterback Matt Barkley, who threw for a school record 468 yards and four touchdowns, while wide receiver Robert Woods caught 14 balls for 255 yards. The Wildcats are giving up 503 yards of total offense per game this year (ranked 115th nationally), along with 37.6 points per game (ranked 112th nationally). The statistics aren't pretty for this unit. Arizona ranks 111th in rushing defense (209.6 rushing yards allowed per game), 110th in passing defense (294 yards per game) and 116th in passing efficiency defense (164.9 percent per game). This is a unit that has had to face quarterbacks such as Stanford's Andrew Luck, Oklahoma State's Brandon Weeden and USC's Barkley, not to mention a powerful Oregon offense. The caliber of offense will subside somewhat in the coming weeks for the Wildcats, which should help the swelling numbers.
Oregon State quarterback Sean Mannion set a school record last weekend when he completed 40-of-66 passes for 341 yards in the loss to Arizona State. The 40 completions broke the previous mark of 39 set in 1986 by Erik Wilhelm. Mannion, who is the only freshman starting at quarterback in a BCS Conference, has completed 62.2 percent of his passes for 1,015 yards and two touchdowns, as well as five interceptions. Markus Wheaton is having a consistent year at wide receiver, catching eight passes per game and averaging 97.5 yards. Oregon State is generating 385.7 yards of total offense per game (279.7 passing, 106 rushing). Oregon State has been plagued by mistakes since opening day, where it has 10 turnovers and already 29 penalties for 295 yards in four games.
Running back Malcolm Agnew has only played in one game due to injury (had 33 carries and 223 yards rushing against Sacramento State in the opener), and Oregon State has leaned heavily on throwing the football with his absence.
Oregon State's defense hasn't been as productive as its offense, although it is allowing a modest 371.7 yards of total offense per game. The Beavers are 95th in the country in scoring defense (31.5 points per game) and are middle of the road in passing defense (222.2 yards per game) and rushing defense (149.5). Oregon State had problems conserving an early 13-0 lead last week against Arizona State because it couldn't contain quarterback Brock Osweiler, who put together two scoring drives in the second quarter that culminated in touchdown passes. Osweiler finished with 258 yards passing and two touchdowns, although the Beavers sacked him four times. Oregon State has recorded nine sacks in four games, and 19 tackles for loss.
This is a matchup of two desperate teams, and both need to stop the bleeding. Something has to give. Arizona is truly a unique team. It has one of college football's most powerful passing games, and one of the country's worst defenses. Oregon State meanwhile, is trying to win with a true freshman quarterback and a non-existent running game, while its defense has shown signs of growth. Arizona has the edge because it can flat-out score behind Foles, but expect a shootout without much defense in Corvallis.
