GAME NOTES: Florida Atlantic travels to Denton this week in search of its first win of the season against the North Texas Mean Green in a Sun Belt Conference matchup.

Florida Atlantic fell to 0-4 last week after a hard fought 37-34 loss to Louisiana. In their first three games, the Owls lost lopsided affairs at Florida, Michigan State, and Auburn. North Texas will be the last stop on the five-game road trip as the Owls will finally have their first home game next week.

North Texas is looking to avoid an 0-2 start to Sun Belt Conference play after losing their opener to FIU. The Mean Green have also suffered losses at the hands of Houston, Alabama, and most recently Tulsa. North Texas's lone victory of the season came at home against the Big Ten's Indiana Hoosiers.

Florida Atlantic leads the all time series between the programs 6-1, including a 4-0 record in Denton. The Mean Green's only victory came last season as North Texas won in Fort Lauderdale 21-17.

Florida Atlantic is coming off its best performance of the season offensively. Graham Wilbert threw for a season-high 219 yards and three touchdowns while Alfred Morris ran the ball 19 times for 80 yards and a touchdown. The Owls' offense showed resilience down the stretch as it tied the score with two fourth quarter touchdowns before Louisiana's field goal as time expired. Tight end Dorvilus Nexon has been Wilbert's top target so far this year as his 122 yards leads the team on 11 receptions. The Owls' offense has been terrible so far this season ranking 119th in total yards per game and 116th in points scored, but those numbers should improve as they venture further into conference play.

The Florida Atlantic defense allowed 37 points last week in their shootout with Louisiana. The defense has been demolished in every game this season. Their season low of points allowed was against Auburn with 30. Louisiana used the defense as a doormat last week as they accumulated 459 yards of total offense. The Owls are lead on the defensive end by David Hinds as he has recorded 32 tackles with 3.5 tackles for loss on the year.

North Texas's offense revolves around their star Lance Dunbar. The running back is third among all active players in rushing yards and needs just 12 yards to move into second place on the school's all time list. The production out of Dunbar has not been ideal thus far for the Mean Green as defenses have been able to key on him and hold him to a 3.2 yards per rush average. But Dunbar has still shown the ability to break a huge game. Against Indiana, the running back ran for 127 yards on 24 carries and caught seven passes for another 152 with a score.

Derek Thompson has not had great success in his first year as starting quarterback. Thompson is averaging just 155 yards a game while throwing four touchdowns and two interceptions. Defenses have forced the Mean Green to beat them through the air, a feat they are hoping to accomplish this week.

The North Texas defense has allowed over 40 points in four of the first five games. The Mean Green are allowing a league worst 498.6 yards per game going into the Florida Atlantic game. The defense clearly needs improvement, allowing 5.4 yards per carry and the 332.6 yards per game. Fortunately for the Mean Green, they will be facing an equally poor offense.

The Florida Atlantic Owls showed they were not as bad as their record indicated last week when they fought until the bitter end against Louisiana. North Texas back-peddled after an impressive showing against Indiana and mailed it in against Tulsa. This game was close last year and there is no reason to believe that will change in 2011. Something will give in this one, as North Texas ranks last in the conference in scoring defense and Florida Atlantic ranks last in scoring offense.

Sports Network Predicted Outcome: North Texas 28, Florida Atlantic 27
