GAME NOTES: A pair of upstart SEC teams will do battle in Knoxville on Saturday ninght, as the Tennessee Volunteers play host to the Georgia Bulldogs.
After two games, both of which ended in defeat, Georgia appeared to be headed for a forgettable season. To the credit Mark Richt's club, the last three games have all resulted in wins, including last weekend's 24-10 decision over Mississippi State. It can certainly be argued with validity that none of the three victories have come over an exceptionally good team, but the 'Dawgs are 2-1 in SEC play and are developing confidence regardless.
Tennessee owns a 3-1 record this season, as the lone loss came at Florida in mid-September. The Vols are fresh off last week's 41-10 thrashing of Buffalo, and they enter this affair with a 3-0 home record.
Although Tennessee owns a 21-17-2 series advantage over Georgia, the Bulldogs crushed the Vols last season by a 41-14 final.
Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray is a big-time performer who will only get better with experience. The sophomore has completed 61.5 percent of his passes for 1,110 yards and 13 touchdowns with six interceptions. Orson Charles has posted four touchdown receptions, and Malcolm Mitchell leads the club with 22 catches and 312 yards. Isaiah Crowell, a dynamic freshman, has rushed for 515 yards for the Bulldogs, who are averaging 34.6 ppg and 413.8 total ypg.
Opponents are generating 20.6 ppg and 258.6 total ypg against Georgia, which has been tough against both the run and the pass. The Bulldogs are yielding a mere 3.2 ypc on the ground and 9.0 yards per pass completion, and they have come up with 11 takeaways, including eight interceptions. Jarvis Jones and Michael Gilliard are tied for the team lead with 28 tackles apiece, and Jones has 5.5 TFL to his credit, including three sacks. As for Bacarri Rambo, he has already notched four interceptions.
In the victory over Mississippi State, Murray threw a pair of touchdowns, but he was intercepted three times, clearly his worst effort of the season thus far. Fortunately for the Bulldogs, the defense was tremendous, limiting MSU to 213 total yards, including 56 rushing yards on 34 attempts. Three takeaways were notched, including a pair of interceptions, and five sacks were registered.
As good as Georgia's Murray has been, Tennessee's sophomore quarterback has been even better. Tyler Bray has completed 68.5 percent of his passes for 1,328 yards with 14 touchdowns and just two interceptions. He clearly has a favorite receiver in Da'Rick Rogers, especially since Justin Hunter went down with a season-ending injury. Rogers has caught 27 passes for 442 yards and six scores, while Tauren Poole paces the ground attack with 318 yards.
It was one of Poole's fellow backs, Rajion Neal, that opened the scoring for Tennessee against Buffalo, racing 20 yards for a score just three minutes into last week's game. Bray then threw a seven-yard touchdown to Rodgers on the next possession, one of two scoring plays between the QB and WR on the day. Bray threw four touchdowns in all and finished with 342 yards. He didn't throw a single interception in the clash.
While the Vols are generating 37.8 ppg and 447.5 total ypg, they are allowing 20.5 ppg and 338.2 total ypg. The defense has room for improvement against both forms of attack, as foes are averaging 4.5 yards per run and 12.2 yards per pass completion. Just one interception has been notched thus far, and five total takeaways through four outings hasn't been enough. Also, greater pressure needs to be applied on passing downs. Austin Johnson leads the Vols with 23 total tackles, and Jacques Smith is tops with 4.5 TFL.
Buffalo struggled mightily against the UT defense last week, managing a mere 264 total yards and 10 first downs. The Vols allowed just 10-of-25 pass attempts to be completed.
In a game that figures to go down to the wire, give Tennessee the edge based solely on the home field advantage. Bray is a special quarterback who figures to set some records for the Vols before his career is over. He still has room for improvement, and that is downright scary for opponents.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Tennessee 27, Georgia 24
