GAME NOTES: After hosting four consecutive games, BYU will finally hit the road again when the Cougars travel to Corvallis to take on the Oregon State Beavers at Reser Stadium.

The Cougars opened their homestand with a 54-10 loss to Utah. It was the second loss in a row for BYU, which fell the week before to Texas, 17-16. However, after the setback to the Utes, the Cougars clawed out three straight wins, defeating UCF (24-17), Utah State (27-24) and most recently San Jose State (29-16).

As for the Beavers, they are coming off their first win of the year, defeating Arizona at home, 37-27. Prior to that victory the Beavers suffered through four consecutive losses, with two of those setbacks coming at home against Sacramento State (29-28 OT) and UCLA (27-19).

Oregon State currently owns a slim, 5-4 edge over BYU in the all-time series, but the Cougars were victorious in the last meeting, as they defeated Oregon State, 44-20 in the 2009 Maaco Bowl Las Vegas.

The Cougars have not been overwhelming in terms of offensive production this season, averaging just 20 ppg, and even though the team only scored 29 points in its recent matchup against San Jose State the offense put up some hefty numbers.

The majority of the success for the team came on the ground, as BYU rumbled for 224 yards on 5.1 yards per carry. Michael Alisa led the way with 91 yards, while Riley Nelson added 65 yards on nine totes. It was a strong showing by the offense, which comes into this weekend producing just 116.0 ypg rushing on 3.5 yards per carry.

The passing attack has also improved, but that is likely due to the changing of the guard under center. Jake Heaps was not getting the job done for BYU, so Nelson took over the quarterbacking reins and since then the signal caller has flourished.

In the win over SJSU, Nelson also threw for 219 yards and three touchdowns, giving him five TDs on the year to go along with his 401 passing yards. If Nelson continues to play at this level then the Cougars should only improve offensively.

What also helped the team get past San Jose State was a stingy defensive effort. Sure the unit gave up 255 passing yards, but the Cougars were able to keep San Jose State from scoring through the air and also collected two interceptions.

The team was also stingy against the run, limiting the Spartans to just 70 yards on 2.7 ypc. Stopping the run has been a problem for this defense, as opponents have already scored nine rushing touchdowns and are averaging 151.0 ypg against BYU's defense.

Brandon Ogletree played a big role in the team's ability to shut down the run, as the linebacker racked up 10 tackles, giving him a team-best 37 on the season.

Over the three previous losses for Oregon State, the Beavers totaled just 39 points, but the poor play finally came to an end this past weekend, as Oregon State erupted for 37 points in a win over Arizona.

Sean Mannion overcame two turnovers by throwing for 267 yards and two touchdowns on 32-of-41 passing. The rushing attack was not overwhelming, but it did enough damage to keep the defense honest. Jovan Stevenson led the way with 99 yards and one touchdown, but the tailback left the game with an injury and it is unclear if he will be ready for Saturday's matchup.

If Stevenson is not able to play then the pressure of the offense will fall on Mannion, who has been mediocre at best this year. The young gunslinger has completed 65.5 percent of his throws, but has just four touchdowns against seven interceptions.

There is an outside chance that Malcolm Agnew will be back on the field for Oregon State, and that could give this unit a huge boost considering he rushed for 223 yards and three touchdowns in the team's season-opener, before suffering a leg injury.

The Beavers were definitely tested this past weekend against the pass and even though the unit allowed 378 yards, the secondary for Oregon State held Nic Foles to only one passing touchdown and intercepted him twice. Even more impressive was the defense against the run, as Oregon State proved to be stout in that area, limiting Arizona to just 53 rushing yards.

Stopping the pass have proven to be the most difficult problem for this defense, as the Beavers are surrendering 253.4 ypg, and have already allowed 11 passing touchdowns. Oregon State has forced 10 turnovers on the year, but the defense comes into this game with only nine sacks.

Jordan Poyer led the way in the win last week with nine stops, while three other players finished with seven apiece, including Feti Unga, who is leading the team with 45 tackles.

The outcome of this game depends solely on the health of Stevenson and Agnew. If one, or both of them are on the field, then the Beavers should win, but if they are both still hurt then BYU will have a fighting chance on the road.
