GAME NOTES: The Colorado Buffaloes will roam to Seattle this weekend for a league clash with the Washington Huskies, marking the first meeting between both teams as members of the Pac-12.
Colorado has lost three straight, including conference setbacks at Washington State and at Stanford the last two weeks. Things got ugly in a hurry against the Cardinal a week ago, as the Buffaloes lost 48-7 and extended their road losing streak to 20-games. The schedule only becomes more difficult. Colorado will meet Oregon, Arizona State and USC in the three weeks following Saturday's matchup in Seattle.
Washington, which had a bye last weekend, has won seven of its last eight, which hasn't been done at the school since 2001. Washington has a pair of skill players in the backfield that are statistically among the nation's best at their positions, and the defense has given up just 37 points in two wins since Nebraska hung 51 on the Huskies on September 17 in Lincoln. The Huskies are right in the thick of things in the Pac-12 race. Washington will travel to Stanford on October 22.
The series between Washington and Colorado is tied 5-5-1.
Colorado rushed for a season high 161 yards against Washington State on October 1st, but the menacing Stanford defense limited the Buffaloes to just 60 last weekend (and just 265 yards total). The Buffaloes rank 109th in rushing offense per game (94.5) and 90th in total offense (349.3). The unit is led by Tyler Hansen, who has thrown for over 1,500 yards and 12 touchdowns with just three interceptions this season. Colorado averages 254.8 yards per game through the air, with Paul Richardson leading the team in both receptions (29) and yards (474) and has chipped in five touchdowns this season. Despite the struggles of the overall running attack, Rodney Stewart has been a quality all-purpose back. Stewart averages 71.8 yards rushing per game, and has caught 26 balls for 417 yards, both marks that are second on the team behind Richardson.
Luck had his way with the Colorado secondary, throwing for 370 yards and three touchdowns and Stanford hung up 553 yards of total offense. Colorado will face another talented signal caller in Washington's Keith Price this weekend in Seattle, and is hoping to improve upon the 93rd national average of 254.8 passing yards allowed per game. Overall, Colorado is giving up 383.3 total yards (including 133 rushing) and 33.3 points per game. Colorado has counted on Josh Hartigan and Douglas Rippey at linebacker, and both have proven adept at getting pressure with a combined 6.5 sacks. Colorado ranks 16th nationally with 17 sacks through six games, with Hartigan registering four and Chidera Urzo-Diribe posting 3.5.
Price's efficiency has been impressive at 173.7, which is seventh among all FBS quarterback. He has thrown for over 1,200 yards and ranks second nationally with 17 touchdowns through five games. He has thrown at least three touchdown passes in all of his games, and over the last two wins over California and Utah, Price has thrown for 518 yards and six scores with just one interception. He is surely the catalyst for an offense that puts up 391.2 yards per game, but running back Chris Polk has been the backbone. He ranks eighth in the country in rushing yards per game (122.2), including 189 yards against Utah two weeks ago. Washington has scored 30 points or more in all five of its games this season, which has only happened twice before in school history.
Washington's defense has given up a lot of points this season (29.4 per game), and is 101st nationally in total defense (427 yards per game). The Huskies are 117th in pass defense (323), and every team has been able to keep the score close (with the exception of Utah) because of its ability to pass. Where Washington has stood out defensively is against the run (104 yards) which ranks 23rd nationally, and in the turnover margin. With seven fumble recoveries and five interceptions, Washington is tied for 15th in the nation in turnover margin (1.0). Desmond Trufant leads the team in interceptions with two and is third in tackles with 30.
Washington is the clear-cut favorite, and two dynamic players like Price and Polk will present major problems for Colorado's defense. The Buffaloes will be able to keep pace if they can breath life into the run game and get Hansen into a rhythm against a Washington pass defense that has allowed big numbers so far in 2011.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Washington 45, Colorado 20
