GAME NOTES: The Florida State Seminoles aim to snap a three-game losing streak this weekend when they travel to Durham for a ACC clash with the Duke Blue Devils, who have won three straight games.

Florida State's once-national title contending stature has crumbled dramatically the last several weeks, with the latest loss coming last weekend in a 35-30 setback at Wake Forest. The Seminoles were haunted by mistakes in Winston-Salem, committing five turnovers and 13 penalties for 109 yards en route to the loss.

Duke opened the season 0-2, including a loss to FCS-opponent Richmond in the opener. But the Blue Devils have ripped off three straight since then, including back-to-back wins over Tulane and Florida International. Duke was idle last weekend.

Florida State leads the all-time series with Duke, 16-0, with the last win coming in 2007 in Tallahassee.

Florida State's offense sputtered against Wake Forest, in large part to turnovers (four interceptions, one fumble). Clint Trickett started the game at quarterback, but E.J. Manuel played a large portion of the game under center for the Seminoles after sitting out for two games due to a shoulder injury suffered against Oklahoma. Manuel finished 19-of-35 for 286 yards and two touchdowns, and threw two interceptions. Manuel has now thrown for 952 yards and eight touchdowns this season with six interceptions, while Trickett has thrown for 675 yards and seven touchdowns, with four interceptions. The Seminoles average 411 yards of total offense per game, and are just 112th nationally in rushing offense at 85.6 yards per game. Rashad Greene has been an outstanding freshman for the Seminoles, catching a touchdown pass in each of Florida State's five games, and has six on the year.

The Florida State defense gave up 35 points for the second consecutive game against Wake Forest, and didn't create any turnovers to offset the Seminoles' offensive miscues. The unit has the 10th ranked defense in the country at the moment, allowing just 283.8 yards per game, and is giving up just over 20 points per game. There has been ample pressure, as Florida State averages nearly three sacks a game and is fifth nationally in tackles for loss per game (8.4). Florida State has also been stellar against the run, allowing just 91.6 yards per game, and despite seeing the likes of Oklahoma's Landry Jones, Clemson's Tajh Boyd and Wake's Tanner Price, the Seminoles are allowing just 192.2 yards per game passing.

Much of Duke's early season turnaround can be attributed to the play of quarterback Sean Renfree, who has thrown for 1,361 yards and five touchdowns, with limited mistakes (two interceptions.) Renfree has also posted three rushing touchdowns, and had his best performance against Boston College in mid-September, completing 41-of-53 passes for 368 and two touchdowns, plus one score on the ground. Duke's passing offense ranks 16th in the country (311.6), which accommodates well for a running attack that is among the worst in the country in terms of yardage (97.8). It's clear Duke leans on the passing game, and it has two quality receivers in Connor Vernon and Donovan Varner. Vernor has caught 34 balls for 505 yards and four touchdowns thus far, and Varner is right behind him with 29 catches (including 12 against Boston College) for 347 yards.

Duke's defense gives up 28 points and 401.2 yards per game, and hasn't been in the opposing backfield as much as it would like this season (114th in tackles for loss per game, 84th in sacks per game). However, the Blue Devil defense has played clutch when called upon in the last couple of games (excluding a 48-27 blowout of Tulane.) Duke was clinging to a one point lead with just under a minute to play when Boston College drove to the Blue Devils five yard line. But the Duke defense stuffed Andre Williams on a 3-and-1 for no gain, and Boston College missed the ensuing 23 field goal field goal try. With under seven minutes to play against FIU, the Blue Devil's defense set up the go- ahead score when defensive end Jordan Dewalt-Ondijo sacked FIU quarterback Wesley Carroll, who fumbled in the process. Safety Anthony Young-Wiseman scooped up the football and returned it to the FIU nine-yard line, and Duke punched it on the next play. Matt Daniels leads the team in tackles per game (9.6).

Had Duke not been upset by Richmond in the first week of the season, it could be 4-1 and just two ACC upsets away from being bowl eligible. Nonetheless, it's three game winning streak has created energy for the program in Durham, and Renfree is proving to be a top-shelf quarterback in the league. Florida State is in shambles, and desperately needs a win. It's defense continues to be one of the best in the land on paper, but was completely undercut last week by a sloppy offense. By no means is this game a hand-out like in recent years, but a trip to Durham is exactly what the Seminoles need.
