GAME NOTES: The resurgent Georgia Bulldogs aim for their fifth consecutive victory this weekend as they head to Nashville to challenge the Vanderbilt Commodores, a fellow SEC squad.

After opening the season with back-to-back losses to still-unbeaten Boise State and a talented South Carolina team, Georgia head coach Mark Richt couldn't help but hear the cries for his job. To the credit of Richt and his players, they have bounced back strong with four consecutive victories. Last weekend, the Bulldogs traveled to Knoxville and beat Tennessee by a 20-12 final.

As for Vanderbilt, it began the season with three straight wins under the guidance of first-year head coach James Franklin, eclipsing the program's win total from all of last season (two). Unfortunately for the Commodores, they have lost their last two outings, having been outscored 55-3 in those tilts. Last week's loss came in Tuscaloosa, as the 'Dores were no match for mighty Alabama. That game ended in a 34-0 final.

Georgia has won its last four meetings with Vanderbilt and owns a 51-18-2 series advantage over the Commodores.

Overall this season, Georgia is scoring 32.2 ppg while gaining 405.8 total ypg. The leader of the Bulldogs is sophomore quarterback Aaron Murray, who has completed 61.2 percent of his passes for 1,327 yards with 13 touchdowns and six interceptions. Murray has also run for a pair of scores, but he isn't much of a threat with his feet. He defers to Isaiah Crowell for the rushing duties, and the dynamic freshman has responded with 573 yards and four scores. as for the receivers, Malcolm Mitchell leads the pack with 25 catches for 438 yards and three scores.

Last week against Tennessee, Crowell ran for a pair of third-quarter touchdowns, the only two times the Bulldogs reached the end zone all afternoon. While Georgia's yardage total of 366 was just mediocre, the fact that the club didn't turn the ball over at all was obviously key to the win.

Opponents are scoring 19.2 ppg against the Bulldogs, who are yielding 260.5 total ypg. Georgia has been particularly staunch against the run, permitting a modest 85.8 ypg and 2.7 ypc. The pass defense has been solid as well, surrendering fewer than 10 yards per completion while posting three more interceptions (eight) than touchdown passes allowed. Michael Gilliard leads the 'Dawgs in total tackles (40), while Jarvis Jones is tops with eight TFL, including three sacks.

The most impressive stat from last weekend's victory over the Vols was minus-20, Tennessee's rushing yardage total for the contest. Georgia didn't come up with a single takeaway, but the fact that the Bulldogs didn't give an inch on the ground far overshadowed the lack of turnovers.

Georgia's defense will attempt to stifle a Vanderbilt offense that clearly lacks explosiveness. The Commodores are only averaging 20.4 ppg and 244.4 total ypg, numbers that simply will not get the job done in the SEC. Zac Stacy is the club's best offensive player, as he averages 7.1 yards per rushing attempt. Unfortunately, he only has 40 carries through five outings and simply must touch the ball more often. The quarterback position is an area of weakness, as both Larry Smith and Jordan Rodgers have struggled. Both average fewer than 10 yards per completion, as the club lacks a big-time receiver.

Last week against Alabama, Vandy managed only 190 total yards and moved the chains a mere eight times. Rodgers played most of the game at quarterback and was intercepted twice. Stacy got just four carries for the Commodores, who were a mere 1-of-10 on third-down conversion attempts.

Vanderbilt was far more dominant defensively through the first three weeks of the season than it has been the last two. Still, the Commodores are surrendering just 19.4 ppg and 307.2 total ypg. They have been tough against the run overall, permitting only 108.2 ypg at a clip of 2.9 ypc. Most impressive of all is that the 'Dores have notched 14 interceptions in just five games. Casey Hayward has four picks to his credit, one more than teammate Trey Wilson.

The Commodores didn't have a single interception or fumble recovery against Alabama last week. Vanderbilt does deserve credit for limiting an outstanding running football team to just 3.6 ypc, but the pass defense yielded four touchdowns.

There is no question that Vandy will play hard this weekend, but Georgia will walk away with the victory. Murray and Crowell will put enough points on the board. The same can't be said for the 'Dores.
