GAME NOTES: The Toledo Rockets will try to remain perfect in Mid-American Conference action when the suddenly red-hot Miami-Ohio RedHawks come to town this Saturday for a league bout at the Glass Bowl.
The RedHawks opened the year with four straight losses and outside of the six- point loss to Minnesota, the RedHawks were soundly defeated by Missouri, Bowling Green and Cincinnati. However, since the loss to the Bearcats, the RedHawks have won back-to-back games, taking care of business against Army and most recently Kent State (9-3).
The Rockets had a similar start to their season as they lost three in a row to Ohio State, Boise State and Syracuse. However, the Rockets were able to bounce back with three straight wins and more importantly each victory came against a league foe. Toledo mopped the floor with Temple and Eastern Michigan, but just narrowly escaped with a victory over Bowling Green this past weekend.
In a series that began back in 1936, the RedHawks own a 28-21-1 edge over Toledo. The Rockets were able to get past Miami-Ohio back in 2009 by a 31-24 decision, but that win came in Oxford. Surprisingly the Rockets have struggled at home against the RedHawks, posting just a 12-13 ledger in front of a home crowd.
The RedHawks might have been victorious last Saturday against Kent State, but it definitely was not a banner performance for the offense, as Miami-Ohio finished with only nine points.
Miami's lone touchdown did not come until late in the third quarter and it was a 16-yard touchdown pass from Zac Dysert to Chris Givens. Dysert however, completed less than 50.0 percent of his passes in the win and was sacked five times.
The ground game was even worse, as the RedHawks finished with just 41 yards on a mere 1.2 yards per carry. This is not surprising though, since the team is currently ranked 120th in the nation with only 66.3 ypg on the ground.
What Miami needs is for Dysert to put forth a stronger performance and take control of the offense. Through six games the signal caller has just 1,503 passing yards and just seven touchdowns against five interceptions.
Usually when a team only scores one touchdown and still manages to land in the win column that means the defense played a huge role in the victory. That was certainly the case for Miami-Ohio against Kent State, as the RedHawks held the Flashes to just three points and also recorded a safety in the win.
The RedHawks were relentless in the win, holding the Flashes to just 3-of-17 on third down attempts, while forcing one turnover and recording five sacks. Throughout the season the RedHawks have placed adequate pressure on opposing signal callers, collecting 16 sacks, but forcing mistakes has been a different story as this unit comes into the weekend with just 10 takeaways.
The biggest problem though has been stopping the run, as opponents are gashing this unit for 178.8 yards per game. However, in the win over KSU the defense allowed just 75 rushing yards, which is clearly a huge improvement compared to the team's numbers on the year. A big help in stopping the run was Anthony Kokal, who finished with eight tackles in the win.
The Rockets are successful offensively, because they possess possibly the most balanced attack in the conference. The offense has scored 30 touchdowns, and 15 can be accounted for by the ground game, while the other 15 have come via the pass.
Toledo's rushing attack is producing 175.0 ypg and there is not just one option for the team to lean on. Morgan Williams is pacing the squad with 405 yards and seven scores, while David Fluellen has contributed 313 yards and two more touchdowns. This group could become more potent very shortly because Adonis Thomas could be back either this week or next week and he brings tremendous speed to the table.
Like the ground game the Rockets do not possess just one quarterback either, as the team consistently rolls out Austin Dantin and Terrance Owens. Dantin has thrown for 925 yards and nine touchdowns on the year, while Owens has five touchdowns under his belt. Regardless of who is under center the main target is Eric Page, and he is pacing the squad with 60 receptions for 614 yards.
In the team's recent win over Bowling Green, Dantin and Owens were quietly, but not because of the Falcons play defensively, but because the rushing attack found some much room to run. Williams led the way with 136 yards and three scores, while Fluellen added another touchdown and finished with 93 yards.
The defense has not been as consistent as the offense, but the unit has done enough to keep Toledo in the win column. This unit is surrendering a ton of yardage, as teams are producing 356.7 ypg, but what has helped this squad has been its ability to force mistakes, as the Rockets head into this game with 16 takeaways.
Toledo only forced one turnover in the win over Bowling Green, but the defense was able to keep BGSU's quarterback Matt Schilz relatively quiet and that is no easy task, especially considering that defending the pass has been the biggest issue for this defense.
Desmond Marrow, who is second on the team with 42 tackles, added 10 stops in the win over the Falcons and had three pass break ups. If Toledo can continue to improve in this area and chip away at the 225.4 yards per game opponents are averaging through the air then this defense could become very dangerous.
Miami-Ohio will definitely need more than nine points to win this game. The Rockets are too strong offensively though and should have no trouble against Miami's weak defense.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Toledo 38, Miami-Ohio 17
