GAME NOTES: The Oregon State Beavers will travel north to Seattle this weekend for a Pac-12 meeting with the Washington State Cougars at CenturyLink Field.
Oregon State lost 38-28 against BYU in a non-league game last weekend, a week after picking up its first win of the season over Pac-12 opponent Arizona. The Beavers have won three of the last four games against Washington State, who marched into Corvallis and upset Oregon State 31-14 a year ago. Saturday night's matchup will open a two-game road trip for Oregon State, which will jet to Salt Lake City next weekend for its first ever Pac-12 meeting against Utah.
Washington State has lost two consecutive games, including last weekend's 44-14 setback against Stanford in Pullman. The Cougars have sported a high octane offense through six games this season, and getting starting quarterback Jeff Tuel back last week from a clavicle injury was a boost for the unit. Washington State still has plenty of work to do in order to become bowl eligible for the first time since 2003. The Cougars will travel to take on Oregon and California in the games following its Seattle showdown with Oregon State.
Washington State leads the all-time series with Oregon State, 47-44-3.
Freshman QB Sean Mannion has shown flashes, as well as growing pains in 2011. He completed 27-of-43 passes for 306 yards and one touchdown last weekend against BYU, but he also tossed two interceptions. Markus Wheaton had another standout game against the Cougars, catching eight passes for 104 yards, but the rushing attack produced just 59 yards on 23 carries. Mannion has thrown for nearly 1,600 yards this season, with five touchdowns against nine interceptions. He has thrown eight interceptions in the last three games, including four against Arizona State on October 1st (Mannion's passing efficiency is 119.9). Wheaton averages 7.6 catches per game, good for third in the Pac-12, and is recording 91.3 yards per game. Jordan Bishop and James Rodgers have combined for 39 catches for 492 yards and two touchdowns.
Oregon State has the 28th ranked passing offense (284.1) in the country, but it ranks just seventh in the pass-happy Pac-12. The Beavers rush for 101.8 yards per game, and average 386 yards and 22 points per game.
The Beaver defense gave up nearly 300 yards rushing last weekend against BYU, which was an uncharacteristic performance considering Oregon State allows just 155. 5 rushing yards per game. The unit has faced some elite quarterbacks through six games, and is giving up 247.3 yards per game through the air (ranks 90th nationally). Michael Doctor leads the team with 38 tackles, while Scott Chrichton is tied for first in the Pac-12 with eight tackles for loss. Oregon State has 12 takeaways in six games, including six interceptions. Jordan Poyer has three interceptions (one of which was returned for a touchdown), which is tied for first in the Pac-12.
Washington State has the second best passing offense in the Pac-12, averaging 326.6 yards per game. The catalyst has been the quarterback position. Starter Jeff Tuel was injured in the opener against Idaho State, and Marshall Lobbestael stepped in, throwing for over 1,600 yards and 15 touchdowns in Tuel's absence. Tuel returned last weekend against Stanford, going 17-of-30 for 145 yards.
Although Stanford held Washington State to just 209 yards passing and 48 yards rushing last weekend, the Cougars have proven to be a high-scoring unit (36.1 points per game), and certainly have weapons. Marquess Wilson has 36 catches for 688 yards and five touchdowns, while Isiah Barton and Jared Karstetter have combined for 60 catches for 660 yards and seven touchdowns. The running attack, which ranks 88th nationally with an average of 126. 6 yards per game, is keyed by Rickey Galvin, who has put up 319 yards and three touchdowns on 48 carries this season.
The Cougars rank sixth in the Pac-12 in total defense, allowing 382.1 yards per game. Stanford's Andrew Luck had his way with the secondary last weekend, throwing for 336 yards and four touchdowns, and the running game gashed Washington State for another 139 yards. Overall, the unit allows 245.8 yards passing per game (141.4 passing efficiency allowed), and 136.3 yards on the ground. Washington State has recorded ten takeaways this season, including three in the last two games against UCLA and Stanford. Alex Hoffman-Harris has been one of the more productive players on the defensive side of the ball, leading the team in tackles with 42, and has recorded two sacks.
Oregon State has a lot of talent, but is going through the development process with Mannion and is hurt by a inept running game. The defense has been underwhelming, and Washington State's pass-happy offense should be able to take advantage of this secondary. Look for the Cougars to sneak out a hard fought win against the Beavers.
