GAME NOTES: The Arizona Wildcats invade Seattle this weekend for a Pac-12 clash with the Washington Huskies, who snapped a three-game losing streak last weekend in a loss to Stanford.
Arizona's Tim Kish won his first game as interim head coach last week with a 48-12 victory over UCLA. The win snapped a five-game losing streak for the Wildcats, and was the first win of the season against an FBS foe. Arizona will have four players suspended this week from the fallout from a brawl with UCLA in last week's win. Following its matchup with Washington, the Wildcats will return home to host Utah on November 5th.
Stanford beat the Huskies soundly last weekend, 65-21. Washington had won three straight prior to the setback, beating Cal, Utah and Colorado to keep pace in the Pac-12 hunt. This weekend's game represents an opportunity for the Huskies to become bowl eligible, and will mark the second-to-last home game of the season. Washington will host Oregon on November 5th before going on a three-game road swing to complete the season.
Washington leads the all-time series with Washington, 17-9-1. The Wildcats won last years meeting 44-14 in Tucson.
Nick Foles had another big game at quarterback for Arizona against UCLA, completing 26-of-39 passes for 291 yards and three touchdowns. That came as no surprise, as the Wildcats rank sixth in the country in passing offense (373.8) and 20th in pass efficiency (151.7). The surprise came from the rushing attack, which is currently 111th in the nation with just 97.8 yards per game. Against UCLA, Arizona produced 254 yards and three touchdowns, striking a balance on offense that has been absent for much of the season. Arizona had just 53 yards on 19 carries the week before in a loss to Oregon State.
Overall, Foles has thrown for 2,546 yards and 18 touchdowns with five interceptions, and receiver Dan Buckner ranks seventh in the Pac-12 with 541 yards and two touchdowns on 36 catches. Juron Criner also has 36 catches, and has gained 441 yards with six touchdowns in seven games. Geno Crump leads the team with 39 catches, which has resulted in 387 yards and one touchdown this season. Keola Antolin leads the team in rushing with 53.1 yards per game and has scored three touchdowns this season. Antolin rushed for 77 yards on eight carries last weekend.
Arizona's defense had its best showing of the year last week against UCLA, especially considering the Wildcats had given up 141 points the past three games. UCLA scored just 12 points last weekend, and Arizona held the Bruins to just 37 yards rushing on 25 carries all the while forcing two fumbles (the Wildcats have just seven takeaways this season). Arizona is still 114th in the country in both total defense (464.1) and pass defense (290.8) and 105th in scoring defense (33.8). Arizona has only recorded six sacks this season, and 31 tackles for loss overall. Paul Vassallo leads the team with 47 tackles, while Shaquille Richardson is tied for first in the Pac-12 with three interceptions, one of which he returned for a touchdown. Richardson, along with three other defensive backs in Jourdon Grandon, Mark Watley and Lyle Brown, are all suspended against the Huskies. Richardson and Grandon will sit out the entire game, while Watley and Brown will sit out the first half.
Washington's top two players in the backfield still got their yards in the loss to Stanford last weekend. Running back Chris Polk had 144 yards and two touchdowns on just 15 carries, while quarterback Keith Price completed 23- of-36 for 247 yards, with a touchdown and an interception. Washington turned the ball over three times in the loss.
Washington averages 421.1 yards of total offense per game, and scores 34.7 points per game.
Polk leads the Pac-12 in rushing with 124.5 yards per game, which is good for fifth in the nation. He has rushed for over 100 yards in each of his last three games, and has scored five touchdowns on the ground in 2011. Price is sixth in the country is passing efficiency (168.6), has thrown for over 1,700 yards with 22 touchdowns this season, and has added six scores on the ground. His top two receivers are Devin Aguilar and Jermaine Kearse, who have 26 and 27 catches respectively for a combined 737 yards. Kearse has scored six touchdowns this season.
The Huskies gave up only 169 yards passing to Stanford's Andrew Luck last weekend, but were thrashed by the Cardinal rushing game. Stanford posted 446 yards rushing on 44 carries, with Stepfan Taylor and Tyler Gaffney both going over 100 yards in the game, and the Cardinal played very clean offensively with no turnovers. The rushing defense ranks seventh in the Pac-12, allowing 146.8 yards per game, and that has been the hallmark of this unit. In the three consecutive wins prior to the Stanford loss, Washington had held Cal, Utah and Colorado to 108, 17 and 62 yards respectively. Washington ranks 101st in the country in total defense (431.2 yards per game) and 104th in scoring defense (33.7). Linebacker Cort Dennison leads the Pac-12 with 63 tackles (4.5 tackles for loss) and corner Desmond Trufant is fourth in tackles (38) and leads the team with two interceptions.
Arizona can throw it round the yard behind Foles, but Washington's focus will also be on shutting down the run a week after being gashed at Stanford. Arizona's secondary will be depleted due to the suspensions from the UCLA brawl, and that should allow Price to pick his spots and set up the run game for Polk.
