GAME NOTES: The Boston College Eagles will visit College Park this weekend for an ACC matchup with the Maryland Terrapins, who have lost three consecutive games.

Boston College has dropped three consecutive games as well, and its only win of the season has come against FCS foe Massachusetts. The Eagles have been blown out in consecutive weeks by Clemson and Virginia Tech by a combined score of 66-28, and have continued to struggle to move the football consistently. Boston College has a tough remaining schedule. Following this weekend's clash with the Terps, the Eagles face Florida State, NC State, Notre Dame and Miami over the last four weeks of the season.

Maryland returns for a two-game home stretch following a 41-16 loss to Florida State last weekend in Tallahassee. On a three-game losing streak, Maryland took Georgia Tech down to the wire back in early October, blew a huge second half lead a week later in a loss to Clemson and allowed three fourth-quarter touchdowns that allowed the Seminoles to get separation. Maryland needs to win four of its last five to reach a bowl game, and will host Virginia in its home finale on November 5th.

Boston College leads the all-time series with Maryland, 5-3, although the Terps won 24-21 last season in Chestnut Hill.

Despite a promising first drive that featured a two-yard touchdown run by quarterback Chase Rettig to take an early 7-0 lead over Virginia Tech, Boston College continued to find consistency on offense last week against the Hokies. Rettig completed just 13-of-30 passes for 181 yards with a touchdown and interception, and the rushing attack produced just 91 yards on 29 carries. Boston College had two turnovers and lost the time of possession battle by over seven minutes.

Rettig hasn't thrown for over 200 yards since the middle of September against Duke, and over the last three games has an equal amount of interceptions (three) as he does touchdowns. Rettig has thrown for 1,362 yards this season with seven scores and six interceptions, and ranks 96th in the country in passing efficiency (109.3). He gets hit often, as Boston College has given up 18 sacks this season. Bobby Swigert and Colin Larmond have been the two most efficient receivers, combining for 56 catches for 729 yards and three touchdowns. No other Boston College receiver has caught more than 12 balls.

The backfield has been crippled by injuries this season, although Rolandan Finch has provided a spark the past two games, rushing for 81 and 92 yards respectively, with a touchdown coming against Clemson two weeks ago. His carries have gone up considerably; Finch had just 22 in the four games heading into the Clemson contest, but has 37 totes the past two games. Boston College ranks 102nd in the country in rushing, with an average of 114.2 yards per game.

The Boston College defense is allowing 428.2 yards per game (165.5 rush, 262.7 pass), which is next to last in the ACC. Clemson posted 500 yards of total offense on the unit two weeks ago, while Virginia Tech had its way on the ground, pounding the Eagles for 214 yards and two touchdowns on 40 carries. Boston College is also struggling to get pressure; the Eagles are 113th in sacks with just six in seven games, and 85th in tackles for loss per game (five). Linebacker Luke Kuechly has been a defensive force though and the All- American leads the country in tackles with 118.

Maryland's loss to Florida State was marked by its inability to run the football, as the Terps garnered just 59 yards on the ground. Danny O'Brien and C.J. Brown split reps at quarterback last weekend against the Seminoles, with O'Brien completing nine-of-18 passes for 180 yards and a touchdown while Brown completed 11-of-19 for 92 yards but didn't do much on 10 carries out of the backfield.

Maryland is putting up 383.2 yards and 25 points per game, both good for ninth in the ACC.

O'Brien, who didn't play against Clemson, has been erratic at times this year. He has thrown for just 1,110 yards and five touchdowns against six interceptions, and is 81st in the country in passing efficiency (117.09). Brown is the more mobile player, and is second in team-rushing with 315 yards and two touchdowns on 43 carries. He has completed 38-of-78 passes for 361 yards and four touchdowns against two interceptions. Davin Meggett is sixth in the ACC in rushing, averaging 75.1 yards with three touchdowns scored this season.

Maryland's defense has been through the ringer during the three-game losing streak, which has featured three potent offenses in Georgia Tech, Clemson and Florida State. Those three teams combined for 118 points against Maryland, who is 94th in the country in scoring defense. The Terps are surrendering 442 yards of total offense per game, including 215.1 yards rushing (Florida State rushed for 218 yards). The unit has posted 15 sacks and 43 tackles for loss through seven games, with David Mackall and Lorne Goree recording three apiece. Dexter McDougle is tied for third in the ACC with three interceptions.

Boston College struggles up front on both sides of the football, and Rettig continues to have a disappointing season at quarterback. The Eagles' offense has a chance to turn things around this week against a Maryland defense that has been zapped the last three weeks, but don't count on it. A lot of attention has been put on Brown and O'Brien under center, but the bottom line is that the Terps offense has focused on establishing the run the past two weeks. Look for the trend to continue this weekend against Boston College.
