GAME NOTES: One of only two schools in the Western Athletic Conference still without a league victory heading into the final weekend of October, the Idaho Vandals give it another try on Saturday as they host the Hawaii Warriors at the Kibbie Dome in Moscow.
The Vandals, now 0-3 in conference play in 2011, didn't play last weekend which gave them that much more time to dwell on their 31-24 setback at New Mexico State on October 14. The defeat was the fifth straight and the sixth in seven tries on the campaign for a team that has only a 44-14 triumph over North Dakota at home to show for its efforts. Idaho's last win over another member of the Football Bowl Subdivision was in the 2010 season finale when the group slipped by San Jose State, 26-23 in overtime.
As for the Warriors, a squad which has won only once in four chances on the mainland, they are actually 2-1 in league action after defeating the aforementioned NMSU Aggies in a 45-34 final on Saturday in Honolulu. The triumph was the third in four games for Hawaii, a stretch during which the team topped Louisiana Tech in Ruston (44-26) earlier this month for its only win away from home. The Warriors, who are a perfect 8-0 all-time versus New Mexico State, is 12-2 in their last 14 WAC bouts dating back to 2009.
Of the 11 previous encounters between the teams Hawaii, which is a perfect 7-0 in Honolulu versus the Vandals, has taken all but two. Last season Hawaii cranked out a 45-10 win at home.
Joey Iosefa ran for 90 yards and two touchdowns, while Sterling Jackson rushed for a career-high 75 yards as the Warriors produced a season-high 227 yards on the ground in their win over New Mexico State on Saturday night at Aloha Stadium. In addition to an aggressive rushing attack, Hawaii also got another 276 yards through the air, 264 of those from Bryant Moniz, as the squad rolled up 503 yards of total offense. Moniz converted 24-of-39 passes for a pair of touchdowns, but he was also sacked four times along the way. Nevertheless, even though the signal-caller met with pressure in the backfield, it still managed to score twice on the ground. Moniz has been integral in the team's offense this season, helping the group to post 328.0 ypg through the air to rank first in the WAC and eighth in the nation, but also to account for six rushing touchdowns and 252 yards rushing overall. Not known for much of a ground game for quite some time, the Warriors are putting up just 114.9 ypg (101st in the country) but with Moniz taking a central role in that area it forces defenses to stay on their toes.
The 34 points afforded the Aggies were the most allowed to a WAC opponent thus far and the most since the Warriors gave up 40 points in back-to-back games against Washington and UNLV on the road in September. Nevertheless, the Hawaii defense still made a significant impact in the meeting thanks to Kamalani Alo who returned a blocked punt 13 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter. In the second half, following touchdowns by NMSU, the Warriors denied the visitors a two-point conversion on back-to-back tries, essential in keeping the Aggies at arm's length. Linebacker Art Laurel played well enough to record a pair of sacks and a fumble recovery. Laurel now has seven sacks on the season, his average of one per game ranking him first in the WAC and seventh in the nation right now. As a group the Warriors have surged to 3.7 sacks per game which is not only tops in the league but also good for third-best in the country. That pressure up the field has taken some of the attention off the secondary which has been a bit too lenient in permitting 259.9 ypg through the air which is sixth-most in the WAC.
The Vandals figured to have some issues coming into 2011 while breaking in a new starting quarterback, but the ride has been incredibly bumpy while Brian Reader gets comfortable as the leading man in the huddle. Reader is converting 52.6 percent of his pass attempts for 206.6 ypg and has tossed nine touchdowns, but he's also been picked off seven times which almost negates all of his positive progress. Mike Scott and Armauni Johnson have been favorite targets down the field for Reader, combining for 62 receptions, 815 yards and four touchdowns, but the unit could still use another reliable option. Princeton McCarty, despite starting just two games at running back, has a team-best 359 yards and a pair of TDs on the ground, but the group as a whole is averaging just 76.1 ypg which is dead last in the WAC and 118th nationally. McCarty has shown that he can be a productive kick returner, but really the Vandals need more accountability at the line of scrimmage.
First and foremost, when it comes to the defense for the Vandals, opponents have been brutalizing the secondary from the very beginning of the campaign. After seven games the team is ranked 107th in the country and last in the WAC with 272.4 ypg allowed and the squad has intercepted just six of a potential 257 pass attempts by the opposition. The unit has forced 10 fumbles, but has recovered only four of those miscues which is why Idaho's turnover margin is minus-0.57 per game right now. The group has been soft in the first half especially, permitting foes to generate 140 of their collective 207 points before halftime. The Vandals have limited teams to just 12 total points in the fourth quarter, but by then those teams have simply decided to call off the dogs and run out the clock.
If the Vandals are not careful they could be in for a world of trouble this weekend, especially if Moniz gets into a groove throwing the ball early in the contest.
