GAME NOTES: The Auburn Tigers will attempt to become bowl eligible this Saturday as they play host to the Ole Miss Rebels in SEC action.
Ole Miss jumped out to a 17-0 lead over Arkansas last weekend and appeared to be on its way to an upset. Unfortunately for the Rebels, they were unable to maintain the outstanding effort for 60 minutes, and the Razorbacks fought back to post a 29-24 triumph. Houston Nutt's Ole Miss squad is now a lowly 2-5 overall, and four of the last four outings have ended in defeat.
Auburn has won 12 consecutive games at Jordan-Hare Stadium, which is tied for the seventh longest win streak at the stadium in program history. The Tigers' three losses this season have come against teams currently ranked in the top-10, including last weekend's embarrassing setback to No. 1 LSU by a 45-10 final. While disappointed, Gene Chizik's group must refocus in a hurry, as a win this weekend would make the club eligible for a bowl game.
Auburn owns a 26-9 series advantage over Ole Miss, which includes wins in eight of the last 10 meetings.
Ole Miss will scare no one, including Auburn, with its offensive ability, as the team is averaging a mere 20.6 ppg and 269.6 total ypg. The Rebels are rushing for only 108.9 ypg at a clip of 3.1 ypc, and they have three more interceptions than TD passes to date. Randall Mackey has taken most of the snaps in recent weeks for the Rebels, and he has done little to prove capable of leading the team to victory on a consistent basis. Donte Moncrief has four receiving TDs on just 16 catches and simply needs to touch the ball more. As for the ground attack, both Jeff Scott and Brandon Bolden are capable performers, and the former paces the club with six TDs.
Against Arkansas last weekend, Ole Miss posted 370 total yards and got to the end zone three times. Just one turnover was committed by the Rebels, who held the ball for more than 37 minutes. Unfortunately, the defense gave up some big plays, including three rushing TDs in a span of 17 minutes.
Stopping the run has proven to be a major problem for Ole Miss this season, as the team is surrendering 222.9 ypg on an average of 5.6 yards per attempt. Of the 24 TDs that have been permitted to opposing offenses, 17 have been rushing scores. The Rebels are giving up 29.1 ppg and 442.1 total ypg overall, numbers that simply aren't good enough to keep the club competitive in the nation's toughest conference.
Switching focus to Auburn, it had a new starting QB under center last week against LSU, as Clint Moseley got the nod. Facing one of the top defenses in all of college football, Moseley was sacked six times and intercepted once while failing to throw a TD pass. The Tigers only managed 248 total yards in the affair and churned out a mere 2.6 yards per rushing attempt.
Auburn averages 24.2 ppg and 346.8 total ypg, pedestrian numbers by most accounts. The best player for the offense is Michael Dyer, who has rushed for 812 yards and eight touchdowns while gaining 5.1 ypc. Onterio McCalebb, who has run for 387 yards, leads the club with 22 catches. Top wideout Emory Blake is listed as questionable for this weekend's tilt with a knee injury.
Defensively, the Tigers yielded five touchdowns to LSU in the blowout and failed to notch a single takeaway. Clearly, the play of the defense needs to be far better this weekend.
So far this season, the club is giving up 28.2 ppg and 403.0 total ypg, and there is room for considerable improvement against both the run and the pass. Foes are gaining 181.4 rushing ypg at a clip of 4.5 ypc, and opposing QBs have tossed 12 TDs with only seven INTs against the Tigers. Auburn's most active defender has been Neiko Thorpe, as he has 64 total tackles to his credit in addition to a pair of interceptions. Corey Lemonier has notched 10 TFL, including six sacks.
As bad as Auburn was last week against LSU, a victory over Ole Miss seems all but certain. The Rebels will be fortunate to win a single conference game, and Houston Nutt is almost certainly on his way out in Oxford.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Auburn 27, Ole Miss 13
