GAME NOTES: Still in search of their first win on the season, the Florida Atlantic Owls will host the Arkansas State Red Wolves, who currently sit on top of the Sun Belt Conference.
The Red Wolves opened the year with two losses in their first three games, but since then the team has claimed five consecutive victories. The most recent win for Arkansas State was a 37-14 decision over North Texas, which brought the team's league mark to 4-0 on the season.
It has been one bad loss after another for FAU, which through seven games has been clobbered by the opposition. The Owls only played one game tight, falling to Louisiana 37-34, but every other matchup has seen the Owls loss by double figures.
In regard to the all-time series between the two schools, both the Red Wolves and Owls have won three games apiece, with last year's matchup going to Arkansas State by a 37-16 margin.
The Red Wolves are perfect in league play because the offense is averaging over 30.0 ppg. The main reason for that is the play of QB Ryan Aplin, who has thrown the team on his back.
Aplin has thrown for 2,115 yards and 10 touchdowns. He also has 10 interceptions, but he has given the team a boost on the ground by leading the way with 410 yards. Frankie Jackson has also made some minor contributions to the ground game, rumbling for 273 yards and a team-best four touchdowns.
The last time Arkansas State was on the field the team was once again led by Aplin, who not only threw for 322 yards and three touchdowns, but also led the ground game with 69 yards. As a whole the Red Wolves finished with 218 rushing yards and two touchdowns, and one of those scores came from Jackson, who finished with 44 yards.
The offense has been outstanding thus far, but it takes much more than scoring to go on a run like Arkansas State has. Tenacious defense has been a key as well for the Red Wolves.
Arkansas State has done a terrific job against the run and even though teams are producing 118.1 ypg, the defense has held opponents to just 3.2 yards per carry and has allowed only six touchdowns via the run.
Defending the pass has been a different story for the Red Wolves. The team is allowing over 200.0 ypg and has been beaten for 12 touchdowns, but what has kept this unit above water in this area has been its ability to force mistakes, as ASU comes into this game with 10 interceptions and 22 sacks.
In the win over North Texas, the Red Wolves struggled a bit with Lance Dunbar, but the secondary stepped up to shut down the passing attack. Arkansas State finished with an interception and also collected four sacks. One of the sacks came from Demario Davis, who finished with 12 tackles in the victory.
The Owls are averaging just 11.7 ppg. That is simply not good enough to get the job done and it would explain why the team has yet to win this season. The ground game has been bottled up, collecting just 84.9 ypg. Sadly, the passing attack has been just as bad. Graham Wilbert has been unable to take control under center and comes into this game completing less than 50.0 percent of his passes and has tossed only five touchdowns against seven interceptions.
One of those touchdowns came in the team's last matchup against Middle Tennessee. However, the quarterback also threw an interception and was sacked on four occasions. Surprisingly the team found some success on the ground, as Alfred Morris rumbled for 153 yards on 18 carries, and now has a team-best 542 yards on 4.7 yards per tote.
On top of the poor play offensively, the defense has been unable to get the job done, as the team is currently surrendering 34.4 ppg. What has hurt this unit has been the inability to stop the run, as opponents are posting 166.6 ypg and have 16 touchdowns on the ground against FAU.
Middle Tennessee was able to exploit FAU's weakness in the Owls' last game, as they were punished for 187 yards and two touchdowns. However, the Blue Raiders also used the air to take down the Owls, torching FAU for three more touchdowns.
David Hinds led the way in the loss with 14 tackles, while Marcus Bartels added 12 stops. The two players are leading the team in tackles, combining for 109 stops on the year.
The Owls might be home, but it really doesn't matter where this game is played. Arkansas State is simply the better team and should have no problems getting past a very weak FAU squad.
