GAME NOTES: Miami welcomes ACC foe Duke to Sun Life Stadium Saturday afternoon in what will be the Hurricanes' Homecoming game.

This marks only the third road game of the year for the Blue Devils, who are 2-0 in road games with wins at Boston College and FIU but are just 1-5 at home. They just went winless in a three-game homestand, which wrapped up with Saturday's narrow 14-10 loss to 12th-ranked Virginia Tech. Beginning with this weekend's tilt, Duke will play three of its final four regular-season games in opposing stadiums.

Meanwhile, Miami is looking to get hot down the stretch after alternating wins and losses since the start of the season. Most recently, the Hurricanes were upended at home by Virginia last Thursday night, 28-21. In addition to Homecoming, this contest is the third and final game of a three-game homestand, which started with a 24-7 win over then 20th-ranked Georgia Tech two weekends ago.

Miami has won the last seven matchups with Duke dating back to 1983, and the Hurricanes own a 7-1 edge in the all-time series.

Duke was able to hang with nationally-ranked Virginia Tech, although that was mostly due to an outstanding effort by the defense. The offense spoiled valuable possessions, turning the ball over four times and converting only 4- of-16 third downs for the game. Of their five trips to the red zone, the Blue Devils came away with only one touchdown and a field goal. Against a team the caliber of Virginia Tech, that turned out to be the difference in the outcome. Sean Renfree had a particularly tough outing under center, as he was intercepted three times and finished with only 204 yards on 17-of-35 passing. It was a bitter disappointment for a squad that boasts the nation's 28th- ranked and ACC's No. 3 passing offense (279.3 ypg). However, all of that yardage has resulted in only six passing TDs for Renfree, who has thrown seven interceptions on the year. Junior wideout Connor Vernon is the top target with a team-high 51 catches for 740 yards, good for fourth in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Sophomore running back Juwan Thompson has been an afterthought, averaging only 10.1 carries for 46.25 yards in eight games this season.

Duke went into halftime trailing the nation's 12th-ranked team 14-0. But the defense came up with a big effort in the second half, shutting the Hokies out and holding them to a mere 132 total yards to keep things close. However, the offense simply could not capitalize as VT was able to squeak out a win. Safety Matt Daniels turned in a game-changing performance with a team-best 13 tackles and two interceptions on the day. His first pick came at the Blue Devil 15 to end a threat after the Hokies intercepted Renfree on the game's fourth play. On the season, he ranks third in the ACC with 10.25 tackles per game. Led by Daniels, the Blue Devils have shown steady improvement on the defensive side of the ball in recent weeks. After giving up 41 points at home to Florida State three weeks ago, they cut that number to 24 points the following week against Wake Forest, and then further trimmed it down to 14 this past weekend. But playing on the road at Miami, they'll need to bring their A-game once again if they hope to snap their three-game slide.

Top priority for Duke's defense will be trying to slow down 'Canes sophomore running back Lamar Miller, the ACC's second-leading rusher with an average of 114.1 rushing yards per tilt, which also ranks 14th nationally. Miller, who is the first Miami player since Clinton Portis in 2001 to record five straight 100-yard rushing games, has already amassed 11 plays of 25 yards or more in his young career, nine of which have come after halftime. But Miami's offensive playmakers are not limited to Miller. Wideout Tommy Streeter has been a big-play threat for much of the season, and he turned in his best game against UVA with career-highs in catches (seven) and yards (176) to go along with two touchdowns. On the season, Streeter has caught a team-best seven touchdowns and 12 of his 28 catches have gone for 25 yards or more for a 21.57-yard average, which ranks third nationally. But even with Streeter at the top of his game, the Canes could not come out on top against the Cavaliers thanks to an early 17-0 deficit. Senior quarterback Jacory Harris is completing 63.4 percent of his passes on the year and has tossed 15 touchdowns, including three last week, with only four interceptions. His 161.78 pass efficiency rating is good for 10th-best in the country.

Headlining the Miami defense is linebacker and Butkus Award semifinalist Sean Spence, who ranks second in the conference and 12th nationally with 10.71 tackles per game, and 18th in tackles for loss (eighth among linebackers). Spence notched another 10 stops last week against Virginia and has been named the ACC Linebacker of the Week three times this season. Still, even with Spence at the helm, the Canes surrendered points on three straight drives in the first half to dig themselves a hole. However, the Canes showed improvement as the game wore on, especially in the red zone. UVA racked up 470 total yards on the day but had to settle for field goals on two of its three trips inside the 20. Miami finished with six tackles behind the line of scrimmage, but the defense was not able to generate any turnovers, which turned out to be a key factor in a tight game. Miami's has developed somewhat of a bend-but-don't- break mentality, as opponents have managed only 14 touchdowns on 32 trips to the red zone (44 percent). However, the Canes have managed only four interceptions in eight games. With Renfree coming off last week's three-INT performance, it will be interesting to see if that number increases this week.

Miami has won seven straight against Duke, and the Canes are rightfully favored to make it eight in a row playing on their home turf. If Miller can get into a rhythm early with the ground game, it could open up a few big plays for Harris and company through the air.
