GAME NOTES: The Ohio State Buckeyes will attempt to post their 16th consecutive victory over the Indiana Hoosiers when the two teams meet in Columbus this Saturday.
Nothing has gone right for Indiana this season, as its lone victory came way back in mid-September over a non-FBS opponent. The Hoosiers carry a 1-8 record and a six-game losing streak into this affair, and Kevin Wilson certainly hoped for better results in his first season as head coach of the program. Last weekend's Homecoming game resulted in a 59-38 loss to Northwestern, the fourth consecutive game in which Indiana yielded at least 41 points.
As for the Buckeyes, they enter this weekend's tilt riding a high, as they managed to knock off a strong Wisconsin team last weekend by a 33-29 final. Ohio State, which is now 5-3 overall, is also under the guidance of a first- year head coach in Luke Fickell. Just one more victory is needed by the Buckeyes to earn bowl eligibility, and the fans fully expect that win to come at home this weekend.
Ohio State owns a commanding 66-12-5 advantage over Indiana in a series that began way back in 1901.
Edward Wright-Baker took over as the starting quarterback of Indiana after an injury to Dusty Kiel, and his completion percentage of .597 is far better than that of Kiel (.476). Still, Wright-Baker has as many TD passes as INTs (four), and has done nothing but lose one game after another. As a result, Wright- Baker was benched in favor of freshman Tre Robertson last time out. The team's leader in receptions, Damarlo Belcher, missed last week's game due to suspension, and it is unclear whether or not he will be able to help his squad this week. The best player on offense for Indiana, sophomore tailback Stephen Houston, has compiled 577 rushing yards and six touchdowns while pounding out 5.2 ypc.
While Indiana is generating 23.2 ppg and 378.0 total ypg, the team is being victimized for 36.2 ppg and 458.3 total ypg. The Hoosiers have been unable to stop the run, permitting foes to gain 234.7 ypg at a clip of 5.1 ypc. While 16 rushing TDs have been surrendered, an even higher total of 22 passing scores have been given up. Opponents have been able to make good on 50 percent of their third-down conversion attempts against Indiana, a figure that simply must improve.
In the most recent loss to Northwestern, Indiana was able to rack up 488 total yards and score five offensive touchdowns, four of which came on the ground. Houston churned out 151 yards and two scores, while Robertson added 121 yards and a TD. In his first career start, Robertson threw for 169 yards with one TD and one INT.
The solid offensive showing by Indiana last week was wasted by another poor defensive showing, as the Hoosiers was victimized for 616 total yards and eight touchdowns by Northwestern. The Wildcats were able to run for 317 yards behind an average of 5.7 yards per carry, and 18-of-23 passes were completed for 299 yards.
Much like Indiana's Robertson, Ohio State has a freshman quarterback with dual-threat ability in Braxton Miller. While completing 52.4 percent of his passes for 492 yards with six TDs and two interceptions, Miller has rushed for 342 yards and two scores. Jake Stoneburner has only caught 12 passes for Ohio State this season, but six of those have gone for scores, while Devin Smith has hit paydirt on four of his 10 catches. As for the Buckeye ground attack, Carlos Hyde is tops with 408 yards and five TDs, while Miller has rushed for 342 yards and a pair of scores. RB Dan Herron has played well since returning from a lengthy suspension. Fickell's squad averages 24.5 ppg and 309.6 total ypg.
Last week against Wisconsin, Miller and Smith hooked up for a 40-yard touchdown with just 20 seconds remaining, lifting Ohio State to the thrilling victory. The Buckeyes managed 357 total yards against an outstanding defensive football team, as Miller ran for 99 yards and two scores while passing for 89 yards and one TD with no interceptions. Herron added 160 yards on 33 rushing attempts for the Buckeyes.
Opponents are generating just 17.9 ppg and 309.5 total ypg against the Buckeyes, who have been strong against the run as usual, limiting foes to 3.5 ypc. The pass defense has been mediocre, as opposing QBs have been able to throw 13 TDs with nine INTs. Andrew Sweat continues to pace Ohio State with 57 total tackles, and John Simon has notched five sacks. As for Bradley Roby, he has recorded three interceptions.
Wisconsin posted 342 total yards against Ohio State and scored two TDs late in the fourth quarter of that game to seemingly secure a victory. Clearly, Miller and the offense bailed out the OSU defense, which has avoid those late-game collapses.
The Buckeyes will add another win to their record, as Indiana simply does not play strong enough defense to win games in the rough and tumble Big Ten. Miller will continue his maturation under center.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Ohio State 37, Indiana 17
