GAME NOTES: The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns will try to stay perfect at home and remain in the race for the Sun Belt Conference championship as they entertain the ULM Warhawks in an intrastate battle at Cajun Field in Lafayette on Saturday afternoon.
ULM came up short in its comeback effort last week against Western Kentucky, losing to the Hilltoppers in overtime, 31-28. The loss was the Warhawks' second straight and their fifth in the last six games. ULM is ranked near the bottom of the conference and will be attempting to gain some ground against the Cajuns.
Louisiana is contending for a conference championship under first-year head coach Mark Hudspeth after winning just three games last season. Louisiana's losses came at the hands of Oklahoma State in the season opener, and conference rival Western Kentucky two weeks ago. The Ragin' Cajuns got back to their winning ways last week as they dismantled Middle Tennessee, 45-20, in Murfreesboro. The matchup with ULM marks the final home game of the season for Louisiana.
The all-time series between these two programs is tied 23-23. In Sun Belt play, the series is tied at 5-5. In 2010, Louisiana blocked an extra point late to escape with a 23-22 victory over ULM. Chris Masson threw for 330 yards and two touchdowns for the Cajuns in that victory.
ULM's quarterback Kolton Browning threw for a career-best 365 yards in the overtime loss to Western Kentucky. The offense amassed 456 yards total in the contest. The offense has struggled to put points on the board as it is ranked 100th in the nation with 21.9 ppg. Browning has been a decent field general considering the Warhawks are ranked 113th in the nation and last in the conference in sacks allowed. Browning was dropped six times by the Hilltoppers, a number that needs to decrease if ULM hopes to stand a chance against Louisiana.
Brent Leonard has been Browning's favorite target all season as the junior wideout is ranked third in the SBC in receiving yards with 560. Against Western Kentucky, freshman Colby Harper had a break-out performance with eight catches for 110 yards and a touchdown. Harper will be gunning for his second career 100-yard receiving performance this week.
The Warhawk rushing attack is led by Centarius Donald, who has amassed 414 yards to this point in the season. Donald did not see action against the Hilltoppers, but could be a factor against Louisiana. Without Donald last week, the team's leading rusher was Browning with just 29 yards.
The ULM defense held Western Kentucky to 283 yards in the overtime loss. The Warhawks are the conference leader in rush defense, yielding just 103.8 yards per game. The defense held the conference's best rusher, the Hilltoppers' Bobby Rainey, to 104 yards on 30 carries, and should have better success this week facing an inferior rushing attack.
ULM's effort against the pass allowed 155 yards to WKU, which certainly employs a run-furst approach. Louisiana will challenge the Warhawk secondary much more this week. Darius Prelow is tied for the conference lead in interceptions with four. The defensive unit as a whole is led by Jason Edwards, as the senior linebacker has 71 tackles this season.
Louisiana's offense has the highest scoring average in the conference with 32.3 ppg. The Ragin' Cajuns are coming off a 45-point performance against Middle Tennessee's suspect defensive unit. Blaine Gautier showed his versatility last week in the win by throwing for 139 yards and rushing for 95 more. This came after a 419-yard performance against Western Kentucky. Gautier has shown the ability to hurt defenses both through the air and on the ground since he took over the quarterback responsibilities from last year's starter, Chris Masson, who is a more than a serviceable back-up.
Freshman Alonzo Harris had a career-high 189 yards on 33 carries for the Cajuns against Middle Tennessee. It was the first time the rookie eclipsed the 100-yard mark in his career, but he has now established himself as the team's workhorse and will be aiming to thrash the conference's best run defense this week. Harry Peoples and Javone Lawson are both ranked in the top-five in receiving yards in the conference. Either wideout is capable of reeling off a 100-yard receiving game as opposing defenses have found it nearly impossible to contain them both this season.
Louisiana ranks in the middle of the Sun Belt pack in terms of scoring defense (27.6 ppg) and total defense (374.6 ypg). The Ragin' Cajuns have been streaky defensively, but they're coming off a great performance as they held the Blue Raiders, who lead the conference in total offense, to just 20 points. The defense is led by Lance Kelley, who has 77 tackles on the season.
Louisiana made a statement last week against Middle Tennessee, while ULM's comeback against Western Kentucky came up just short. The Cajuns should be able to extend their four-game home win streak as long as Gautier can be effective passing the ball.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Louisiana 35, ULM 24
