GAME NOTES: Big 12 and Lone Star State rivals will squad off in Austin on Saturday, as the Texas Longhorns play host to the Texas Tech Red Raiders.
Texas Tech opened the season with four consecutive victories under the guidance of second-year head coach Tommy Tuberville. Unfortunately, things have gone down hill lately for the Red Raiders, who have lost three of their last four games. Last weekend, the club was completely dismantled by Iowa State in Lubbock, losing by a shocking final of 41-7. That unthinkable letdown came just one week after Tuberville's club upset previously unbeaten Oklahoma.
Like Texas Tech, Texas needs just one more victory to become bowl eligible. The Longhorns opened the campaign with four consecutive victories before suffering back-to-back losses to Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. Fortunately, Mack Brown's squad was able to get back on track last weekend with a 43-0 romp over Kansas.
Texas owns a commanding 44-15 series advantage over Texas Tech, which includes a 24-14 victory in last year's meeting.
It is hard to imagine Texas Tech playing any worse offensively than it did against Iowa State last weekend, as the Red Raiders turned the ball over three times and finished a dismal 3-of-13 on third-down conversion attempts. Tech kept possession of the ball for a mere 20 minutes, and QB Seth Doege completed just half of his passes. Clearly, it was a performance to forget, although for fans it will be hard to do so.
That seven-point effort was completely unpredictable because the club is quite explosive on offense most of the time. The Red Raiders are generating 38.9 ppg and 508.1 total ypg, but they lost standout tailback Eric Stephens to a season-ending knee injury a few weeks ago and now depend even more heavily on Doege and the passing game. The signal caller has connected on 67.9 percent of his passes for 2,779 yards and 22 TDs with six INTs, tremendous numbers by any standards. Eric Ward paces the Red Raiders with eight receiving scores, while Alex Torres is tops with 510 receiving yards.
The Red Raiders have surrendered at least 34 points in six consecutive games, so there are major problems on the defensive side of the ball. Against the Cyclones last week, Tech was victimized for 512 total yards, including a staggering total of 368 yards on the ground. Tuberville's troops yielded 5.5 yards per rushing attempt and failed to intercept a pass while allowing ISU to make good on 11-of-22 third-down conversion attempts.
Opponents are generating 32.0 ppg against Texas Tech, which is permitting 436.0 total ypg. The team has been weak against the run, surrendering 225.8 ypg at a clip of 4.9 ypc. Of the 30 TDs that have been allowed to opposing offenses, 17 have been rushing scores. Just five interceptions have been notched to date, and the total of 10 sacks through eight games is disappointing as well. The fact that no player on the roster has more than two sacks or two interceptions speaks volumes about the lack of defensive star power.
Switching focus to Texas, its offensive game plan was obvious last week, as the team was committed to pounding the ball on the ground against Kansas. The result was 441 yards on 72 carries, and five rushing touchdowns were notched. Joe Bergeron led the way with 136 yards and two scores on just 13 attempts, while Malcolm Brown tallied 119 yards and two TDs. David Ash wasn't asked to do too much with his arm, but he did complete 14-of-18 passes for 145 yards. Texas held the ball for over 44 minutes and finished 11-of-16 on third-down conversion attempts.
Texas is generating 31.9 ppg and 414.6 total ypg this season, and the ground attack accounts for 218.9 ypg and two-thirds of the offense's touchdowns. Brown has rushed for 635 yards and five scores, and he has gotten support from both Bergeron and Fozzy Whittaker. Ash has only thrown three TDs against five INTs in the seven games he has played, but he will continue to get better with Jaxon Shipley and Mike Davis to throw to.
The Texas defense was just as impressive as the team's offense last week, if not more so, as the Longhorns posted their first shutout since 2005 while limiting the Jayhawks to an incredibly low total of 46 yards. Minus-two rushing yards were permitted on 20 attempts, and KU completed a mere 7-of-16 passes. Kansas was only 1-of-10 on third-down conversion attempts and managed a meager three first downs in the lopsided affair.
Opponents are generating 21.7 ppg and 296.4 total ypg against Texas, which is yielding just 3.8 yards per rushing attempt and 9.8 yards per pass completion. The Longhorns have been stellar on third down, permitting foes to make good on only 27 percent of their conversion attempts.
The edge has to go to Texas in this game, not only because of the homefield advantage, but because of how dreadful Texas Tech looked last week. It may be tough for the Red Raiders to bounce back.
