GAME NOTES: The Utah Utes will whip into Tucson this weekend for a Pac-12 matchup with the Arizona Wildcats, who have lost six of their last seven games.

Utah won for just the second time in five games last weekend against Oregon State, behind a stellar running attack and a defense that forced four turnovers and got after the Beavers' freshman quarterback. Utah will need to win two of its last four conference games to qualify for a bowl in its first year as a Pac-12 member, which has been a roller coaster ride for the Utes. Utah will host UCLA on November 12th.

Arizona continues to boast the Pac-12's most potent passing offense, but the aerial assaults haven't translated into very many victories in Tucson. Arizona lost 42-31 to Washington last weekend, and now must win out to get into a bowl. The remaining schedule for the Wildcats includes Utah this weekend, followed by road games at Colorado and Arizona State, and a home finale against Louisiana.

Utah leads the all-time series record with Arizona, 19-15-2.

Utah's offense came alive last weekend against Oregon State, with a heavy commitment to the run. Quarterback Jon Hays completed just 6-of-14 passes for 62 yards, and even though he tossed two touchdowns, the day belonged to running back John White. The Utes gave White the call 35 times, and he responded with 205 yards and one touchdown, accounting for most of Utah's offensive production during the day. The Utes scored 21 points in the second quarter to break open a close game against the Beavers.

White is third in the Pac-12 with 114. 3 yards rushing per game, and his output against the Beavers was exactly what the Utes needed after posting just 178 yards of total offense against Cal the week before. White had just 39 yards on 15 carries in that game, but his workload against Oregon State represented the second time in three games he carried the ball 35 times or more, with both performances resulting in 185 yards or more. White has 915 yards and eight touchdowns this season. Utah averages 306.2 yards and 23.2 points per game.

The Utah defense also turned in a fine showing against Oregon State, limiting the talented Sean Mannion to 27-of-49 passing. Mannion did have 231 yards passing and one score, but he was intercepted three times as Utah generated four takeaways and limited the Beavers to just 32 yards rushing on 26 carries. Utah ranks 11th in the country in run defense (91.0), and 22nd in total defense (325.6). The Utes are also tied for 14th in the land with 2.8 sacks per game, with Trevor Reilly leading the team with five this season. Reilly ranks third in the Pac-12 in tackles for loss with nine, while Chaz Walker is also second in the league in tackles with 69 stops.

Arizona's Nick Foles finished 32-of-50 with 388 yards passing and two touchdowns against Washington last weekend, but he also was intercepted three times on a day when the Wildcats turned the ball over four times. Juron Criner had a big game for the Wildcats, posting 11 catches for 118 yards and two touchdowns. Criner hauls in 6.7 catches per game for 79.8 yards to lead the Arizona receiving corps. Dan Buckner has caught 38 passes for 568 yards and two scores this season, while Gino Crump has contributed 45 grabs for 442 yards and one score.

Foles is 21st in the country in passing efficiency (150.1), and fifth in total yards per game with 355. He has thrown for 2,934 yards and 20 touchdowns against eight interceptions this season. In three of the past four games, Foles has thrown multiple interceptions. Arizona ranks first in the Pac-12 in passing (375.3), and third in total offense (465.7).

Arizona's defense was victimized by Washington running back Chris Polk a week ago, as Polk gained 144 yards and scored four touchdowns on 34 carries. The secondary picked off quarterback Keith Price three times, but Polk was able to score two touchdowns in the fourth quarter against a worn down defense to seal the win. Arizona is currently 113th in the country in total defense (467.2), and 110th in scoring defense (34.8). The unit is also near the bottom in pass defense, ranking 116th and surrendering 293.2 yards per game. The Wildcats, who have recorded just seven sacks as a team this season, are led in tackles by Paul Vassallo, who has 53 stops.

Arizona may be porous on defense, but Utah relies too heavily on the run with White. Arizona will try to make this a track race with Foles and company, and Utah simply doesn't have the passing game nor the secondary to keep up.
