GAME NOTES: The Toledo Rockets will try to rebound from their first league loss of the season when the Western Michigan Broncos head to the Glass Bowl for a Mid-American Conference affair.
The Broncos were not on the field this past weekend, but the last time they were in action they snapped a two-game slide with a 45-35 victory over Ball State. It was the third league win for Western Michigan, but the Broncos have struggled on the road, posting a 1-4 mark as the visitor this season.
As for the Rockets, they were cruising through their league schedule, until last Tuesday when they hosted Northern Illinois. The Rockets fell at home to the Huskies, 63-60, and the loss was critical to Toledo's chances at winning the division, because now the team will need to win out and need help.
Last year the Rockets snapped a four-game slide against Western Michigan with a 37-24 victory. The win pushed Toledo's lead in the all-time series to 37-28 all-time.
The Broncos' success offensively has come primarily from the arm of Alex Carder. The quarterback has carried this unit on his shoulders and comes into this matchup with 2,457 yards and 18 touchdowns against nine interceptions. Carder has one clear cut target and that is Jordan White, who is leading the team in receptions (95), yards (1,164) and touchdowns (nine).
Unfortunately for Western Michigan, the rushing attack has not been able to support Carder and the passing game. WMU is churning out 128.9 ypg, which is not a terrible number, but the top back for the Broncos, Tevin Drake, has only 472 yards in nine games.
Drake was able to help the cause in the team's last matchup, as he rumbled for 85 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries. Carder also scored on the ground, but he did much more damage with his arm, throwing for 404 yards and two touchdowns. Both scores went to White, who finished with 172 yards on nine receptions.
Carder needs to air it out often because the defense is riddled with holes, and they are mainly up front. Western Michigan is being pounded for 216.2 yards per game and has already surrendered 16 rushing touchdowns.
Although the Broncos were victorious in their last matchup, the defense still surrendered 220 rushing yards and two touchdowns to Ball State. However, that was only half the story because the secondary was torched for 335 yards and three more touchdowns. It was one of the worst performances against the pass on the year for this unit, which heads into this game with seven interceptions against only 10 touchdowns.
Two of those interceptions belong to Johnnie Simon, who is also leading the team with 75 tackles.
Even though the Rockets were defeated in their last game, they still have one of the most potent offensive units in the conference, and come into this weekend averaging 39.1 ppg.
The Rockets are currently averaging 195.4 ypg on the ground and have three running backs that can carry the load, beginning with Morgan Williams, who is pacing the team with 498 yards and nine scores. Adonis Thomas is contributing 475 yards and six scores, while David Fluellen comes into the weekend with 410 yards.
Austin Dantin and Terrance Owens have shared time under center, but Dantin is the better passer of the two and currently has 15 touchdowns against only one interception. Regardless of who is under center, Eric Page is the main option, and rightfully so because the wideout is dangerous and that is proven by his 75 receptions, 814 yards and nine touchdowns.
Page tied a conference mark with five touchdowns in the team's loss to Northern Illinois. All five touchdown passes came from Dantin, who finished with 321 yards on 20-of-33 passing. Dantin also added a score on the ground, but Thomas did all the work for Toledo's rushing attack, rumbling for 160 yards and two scores.
The defense has not been overwhelming this season, but it has done enough to keep Toledo in the win column, until the team's last game. This unit was destroyed by Northern Illinois, surrendering seven touchdowns, including six through the air.
Stopping the pass has been an issue for this defense, as opponents are producing 248.6 ypg through the air and have scored 21 times via the pass. However, at the same time, the defense has collected 10 interceptions and comes into this weekend with 20 takeaways.
Desmond Marrow comes into this matchup leading the team with 57 tackles and also has two of the team's 10 picks.
Carder and the Broncos should find plenty of success through the air, but the defense will not be able to stop the Rockets from pouring on the points. Toledo cannot afford to lose if the team plans on trying for a MAC title berth.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Toledo 52, Western Michigan 35
