GAME NOTES: The Ohio University Bobcats are coming off a pivotal win over Temple and now will try to inch closer to a division title when the team travels to Mount Pleasant to take on Central Michigan at Kelly/Shorts Stadium.
The Bobcats have clawed their way back into the top spot of the East Division in the Mid-American Conference, thanks to back-to-back wins over Akron and Temple. The win over the Owls was the third league victory for Ohio, which is now 3-2 in conference play, which places the team in a tie with Miami-Ohio. Those two schools will meet in Ohio's season-finale.
As for the Chippewas, they are not in contention for anything, as the team suffered its seventh loss on the year with a 24-21 setback to Kent State. Central Michigan has been battered throughout the season, but the team has performed better at home, claiming two of its three victories in Mount Pleasant.
The last time these two schools squared off was in the MAC title game back in 2009. In that matchup the Chippewas won, 20-10. Central Michigan has clobbered Ohio throughout the years, posting a 21-4-2 edge over the Bobcats in the all- time series.
The Bobcats have done a lot right offensively this season, and have found success on the ground and through the air.
The ground game is churning out 191.3 ypg, led by Donte Harden, who has rumbled for 698 yards. However, the team's rushing touchdown leader with six is quarterback Tyler Tettleton. Tettleton has been even better with his arm, throwing for 2,237 yards and 20 touchdowns against only five interceptions. LaVon Brazill has been the top target all year and is currently leading the team with 46 receptions, 736 yards and eight touchdowns.
In the victory over Temple the Bobcats did what most teams were unable to do and that is run the ball against the Owls. Ohio surprisingly rumbled for 240 yards. Harden did most of the work, racking up 184 yards to go along with one score. Tettleton added a rushing touchdown as well, but he was much more impressive with his arm, throwing for 258 yards and three touchdowns.
The Bobcats needed that production because the defense was at a loss against Temple's offense. The Owls gashed Ohio for 308 yards rushing on 6.8 yards per carry and also threw three touchdowns against this unit.
It was definitely a let down effort by the Bobcats, who are usually stout against the run. Coming into this contest Ohio is limiting the opposition o just 138.1 ypg on a mere 3.7 yards per attempt.
The defense for Ohio has also allowed 13 touchdowns through the air, but at the same time has collected 12 interceptions and 18 takeaways overall. Noah Keller has been a tackling machine for Ohio, racking up a team-best 72 stops.
Throughout the season the Chippewas have leaned heavily on Ryan Radcliff, and while the quarterback has done his best, he has been unable to make up for a struggling rushing attack.
The Chips are producing a meager 121.1 yards per game on the ground and have scored just six times using the run. Because of that Radcliff has had to shoulder the load and sure he has 2,691 yards and 20 touchdowns, but he has also tossed 14 interceptions.
The last time the Chippewas were on the field the rushing attack was shut down once again, as Kent State limited CMU to just 86 yards on 3.2 yards per attempt. With an inconsistent ground game, Radcliff was called upon to lead the charge once again and while the signal caller threw for 316 yards and three scores, he was also intercepted twice and sacked three times.
It doesn't help that the Chippewas have also struggled defensively. Central Michigan is being gashed on the ground and torched through the air, and all that trouble has led to 31.3 ppg.
Opponents have scored 17 rushing touchdowns against Central Michigan and have added another 20 scores via the pass. Three of those passing touchdowns came from Kent State, as the Golden Flashes went to the air to defeat Central Michigan, and finished the game with 281 yards in that department.
Three different players racked up seven tackles in the loss and one of those players was Jahleel Addae, who is currently pacing the squad with 84 stops.
The Chippewas have played better at home, but the Bobcats looked unstoppable against Temple and if they can play at that level again, they should have no trouble getting by CMU
