GAME NOTES: The Eagles chances for a shot at the West Division title in the Mid-American Conference took a large hit in their last matchup, but Eastern Michigan will try to put the pieces back together when Buffalo comes to town this weekend for conference action from Rynearson Stadium.

It has been a rough year for the Bulls, who are currently stuck in a three- game slide. The team has just two victories on the year, and both of those came at home. On the road, Buffalo is winless in five tries, and that includes the team's 41-13 setback to Miami-Ohio on October 29th.

The Eagles were actually keeping pace with Toledo and Northern Illinois in the West Division of the MAC, but that was before Ball State came to town. The Eagles saw their two-game winning streak, and more importantly, any real chance at a MAC title go up in smoke with a heartbreaking, 33-31 loss to the Cardinals. It was the first home loss on the season for EMU, which is now 3-2 in conference play.

This is a relatively new series, but one that has been dominated by the Eagles, Eastern Michigan has won all four of its previous matchups against Buffalo, including a 21-17 decision in 2010.

The Bulls' inability to find any success offensively continued in the team's recent loss to Miami-Ohio, as Buffalo was held to just 13 points.

Surprisingly the weak link was the rushing attack, which has carried this squad all year. Buffalo, which is averaging 136.2 ypg, was limited to just 77 on a mere 2.3 yards per carry. Branden Oliver, who has 900 yards and eight touchdowns on the year, only racked up 47 yards on 24 totes.

Chazz Anderson scored the only touchdown on the ground for Buffalo and also finished with 281 yards and one score through the air. However, he was also intercepted twice and sacked three times.

Anderson has struggled throughout the season and his inconsistent play has hampered this unit. Through nine games the quarterback has just nine touchdown passes against eight interceptions.

The Bulls were not any better on the other side of the ball against Miami- Ohio, as the defense surrendered 41 points and the majority of that came through the air, as Buffalo was torched for five passing touchdowns. This has been an issue for the Bulls all season, as the team has surrendered 16 touchdowns, while collecting just three interceptions. To make matters worse for this unit, the Bulls are being gashed for 200.9 ypg on the ground and have allowed 19 scores via the run.

If there was a positive to take from this unit's performance it would be the play of its leader, Khalil Mack, who has racked up 52 tackles, to go along with 15.0 TFLs and 3.5 sacks.

The Eagles fell just short against Ball State, but quarterback Alex Gillett did everything in his power to make sure that did not happen. The signal caller not only threw for 196 yards and four touchdowns, but he also paced the ground game with 126 yards in the loss.

Gillett has been Mr. Everything for the Eagles from day one this season and comes into this weekend with just nine passing touchdowns, but he has rushed for three more scores and is currently pacing the squad with 565 rushing yards.

Javonti Greene and Dominique White have scored five touchdowns apiece for EMU on the ground and the two tailbacks have combined for 1,104 yards.

The offense did everything it could to help EMU earn another win, but the defense's poor play was too much for Gillett and company to overcome.

Eastern Michigan held Ball State to less than 100 yards on the ground, but the secondary had no answers for Ball State's passing attack, as the Eagles allowed 284 yards and two touchdowns through the air.

This has been the biggest problem area for the defense, which has already surrendered 18 passing touchdowns, and has allowed teams to average 233.1 ypg.

The Eagles suffered a heartbreaking loss to Ball State in the final seconds, so they should be hungry this weekend. Buffalo will need to limit its mistakes and get the ball to Oliver to have a shot in this game. However, even if that does happen, Gillett will overcome and lead his team back to the win column.
