GAME NOTES: Louisiana will have a chance to take a share of the Sun Belt Conference lead with a victory this week as the Ragin' Cajuns travel to Jonesboro to play Arkansas State.

Louisiana trailed ULM 35-24 with 3:08 to play last week, but managed to rally to escape with a 36-35 victory to remain in the hunt for the conference championship. The only blemishes on the Ragin' Cajuns' schedule this season are losses at Oklahoma State and Western Kentucky.

Arkansas State hopes to extend its six-game winning streak and stay perfect at home this week. The winning streak is the longest for the program since 1986. A win would give the Red Wolves complete control of the Sun Belt, while a loss would create a three-way tie scenario as Louisiana, Western Kentucky, and Arkansas State would have all have one conference loss.

Louisiana controls the lead in the all-time series, 21-17-1. In 2010, Arkansas State trailed 31-7 before posting 17 unanswered points to make it a game in the final frame. Arkansas State had an opportunity to tie on its final possession before Ryan Aplin was intercepted by Ragin' Cajun linebacker Maurice Rolle with 1:59 left.

Louisiana is the best scoring offense in the conference with an average of 33 points per game. Last week against ULM, the Ragin' Cajuns amassed 410 yards of total offense. First-year head coach Mark Hudspeth has already led his squad to eight wins after Louisiana only won three games all of last year.

The attack has been led by Blaine Gautier who ranks ninth in the nation in passing efficiency, but will be challenged as he faces the conference's best pass efficiency defense this week. The junior quarterback completed 30-of-47 passed for 355 yards and four touchdowns in the win over ULM. Gautier also has shown the ability to hurt teams with his legs as he has rushed for 390 yards on the year. Alonzo Harris has been exceptional in his rookie season at tailback. The freshman dashed for 189 yards against Middle Tennessee before being held to just 10 yards against ULM. He has shown the ability to punish defenses which might be necessary if Gautier has trouble against Arkansas State.

Javone Lawson and Harry Peoples have made life easier for Gautier as both receivers are having outstanding seasons. Lawson leads the team with 712 receiving yards and six touchdown grabs. Peoples has a team-best 47 receptions for 592 yards. Ladarius Green also has had a huge impact for the offensive attack, most recently posting 136 yards on 13 receptions, which is the new record by a Sun Belt Conference tight end in a single game.

Louisiana's defense was torched by ULM as the Warhawks gained 456 yards of total offense. The Ragin' Cajuns will have their hands full this week against Arkansas State's high powered offensive attack and will need to have a better showing if they want to compete with their conference rival. The defense is led by Lance Kelley, who has 86 tackles and three interceptions this season.

Arkansas State's offense is ranked atop the conference in passing yards, rushing yards, and total yards. The Red Wolves hope to continue their success from last week as they gained 429 yards of total offense against Florida Atlantic in their 39-21 victory.

The 27th best offense in the nation is led in passing and rushing by Ryan Aplin. The reigning Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Week has passed for 2,359 yards and rushed for 459 more this season.

Aplin has targeted Dwayne Frampton enough to make him one of the best receivers in the conference this season. Frampton's 777 receiving yards leads the team and he is coming off of his second double-digit reception game of the season.

Arkansas State not only boasts the conference's best offense, it also has the best ranked defense. The Red Wolves are allowing 324.7 yards per game this season which ranks 20th in the nation. Florida Atlantic felt the wrath of the stifling defense as the Owls were held to 282 yards and turned the ball over three times. The Red Wolves' are led by Demario Davis's 53 tackles. Defensive lineman Brandon Joiner has given opponents trouble all year as he has compiled eight tackles for loss and six sacks.

This game could determine the rest of the season for the Sun Belt. Arkansas State currently controls its own destiny and has the homefield advantage, however Louisiana is a very tough opponent. Gautier and the Ragin' Cajuns cannot fall behind in this one like they did last week and expect the same results.
