GAME NOTES: Middle Tennessee and ULM will both be looking to snap losing streaks as the two schools square off in a Sun Belt Conference matchup in Monroe this weekend.
Middle Tennessee lost its second in a row as Tennessee stifled the Blue Raiders 24-0 in the in-state battle. Middle Tennessee lost to conference rival Louisiana 45-20 the week before.
ULM let one slip away as the Warhawks blew an 11-point lead in the fourth quarter against the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns. The loss to Louisiana was the third straight for the Warhawks as they lost to North Texas before losing to Western Kentucky in an overtime thriller before that.
This will be the 12th time these programs square off. Middle Tennessee holds a 9-2 advantage in the series going into this one. The team that has scored first has won every game with the exception of the 2009 matchup. In 2010, Middle Tennessee dominated ULM, out-gaining the Warhawks in yards of total offense 463-269 en route to a 38-10 victory.
Middle Tennessee has one of the better offenses in the Sun Belt. The offense ranks in the top three in rushing, passing, and scoring. The Blue Raiders' passing attack is ranked 26th in the nation, as it averages 270 yards per game.
Logan Kilgore has been the leader all year, as the sophomore quarterback has passed for 1894 yards and 16 touchdowns with 10 interceptions. Kilgore was benched against the Volunteers and finished the game completing just 4-of-10 passes for 25 yards with an interception. Jeff Murphy came in to relieve Kilgore and completed 14-of-21 passes for 108 yards but also threw an interception.
The Blue Raiders' rushing attack features William Pratcher, who leads the team with 95 attempts and 516 yards. Benny Cunningham and D.D. Kyles are both used very often, but are both listed as questionable for this matchup due to injury Malcolm Beyah is a very touch assignment for opposing defenses each week. The senior wideout had six or more catches in five straight games before being contained by Tennessee.
Middle Tennessee's defense has received a lot of blame for the team's woes this season. The defensive unit allows 33 points per game and 436.6 yards of total offense. The Blue Raiders' rushing defense is ranked 105th in the nation as teams are averaging 205.8 yards per game on the ground against them. Luckily for Middle Tennessee, ULM will be without its number one running back. The Blue Raiders are led by Eric Russell, who has 64 tackles this season.
ULM's offense is guided by Kolton Browning. The sophomore quarterback has been very active lately completing 62-of-102 passes for 623 yards in the Warhawks' last two games. Browning is constantly under pressure as the Warhawks are ranked 110th in the nation and last in the conference in sacks allowed.
The Warhawks will be without leading rusher Centarius Donald for the rest of the year. With Donald out, Jyruss Edwards has taken over the role of lead running back. Edwards had an impressive performance against Louisiana as he carried the ball 14 times for 63 yards and three touchdowns. Edwards now has a team-best seven touchdowns on the year.
Brent Leonard has been the most outstanding player on the offense this season for ULM. The junior receiver is ranked 22nd in the nation in receptions per game and is averaging 87.1 yards in his last seven games.
The Warhawks' defense is ranked 11th in the nation and first in the conference at stopping the run. During the three game losing streak, every opponent has scored over 30 points against ULM. In the two wins, the Warhawks gave up a combined 17 points. The 25th best defense in the country is led by Jason Edwards, who has 71 tackles on the year. Darius Prelow's four interceptions are tied for the most in the Sun Belt.
Middle Tennessee will be relieved to be back in Sun Belt action after facing a SEC opponent last week, but it will be no cake walk. Both teams have competed with the teams at the top of the conference standings, but ULM is playing far better football right now. Edwards should be able to continue his success from last week against a very weak Middle Tennessee rush defense.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: ULM 35, Middle Tennessee 23
